Previously on Hand aufs Herz

Bea: An expulsion is not the right reaction to Ben's problems.

Helena: I never had the intention to expel Ben Bergmann from school. I just wanted to see your reaction. And it was very telling indeed.

Bea: Helena, what do you want?

Helena: The real question is, what do you want? Or better yet, who you want. Michael? Or rather Ben Bergmann, after all?

Intro

[Pestalozzi, principal's office]

Bea: Ben Bergmann is my student.

Helena: That's not what it looked like in the hospital. Downright touching how your student took care of you after the accident. You've got feelings for Ben Bergmann.

Bea: You'd like that, wouldn't you? Then Michael would finally be free for you. I'm sorry to have to disappoint you, Helena. I love Michael. And Michael... loves me.

With that she leaves the room.

[Pestalozzi, schoolyard]

Ben: A visit to a music studio. That sounds really cool.

Luzi: Yes, true, but now of all times? That seems rather irreverent to me.

Ben: Because of the accident.

Luzi: And Timo is still in the hospital...

Ben: Maybe a little distraction is just what we need.

Ben reaches out and touches her cheek, and Bea comes out (of the school, that is) just in time to witness this.

Luzi: Maybe. What's wrong?

Ben: Nothing. Why?

Luzi: Is it because of the other day? Well, I mean, you don't have to be afraid that I'm going to kiss you all the time now, just because we kissed when we were running away from the police.

Ben: It was probably just the adrenalin. Sometimes you just end up in each other's arms.

Luzi: So, nothing has changed for you?

Ben: No, why? Did it for you?

Luzi: N-no.

Ben: Great. The most important thing is that everything stays the same between us. Ready to go?

Luzi: Yes.

[Pestalozzi, foyer]

Jenny and Lara are coming down the stairs.

Lara: It's great that you conducted our practice today.

Jenny: Well, I just thought we'd simply continue on until they find a substitute for Frau Lohmann. We could all use some normalcy, couldn't we?

Lara: And how's Emma doing?

Jenny: Better. By now she is even able to talk about the accident.

Bodo comes up.

Bodo: Hey!

Lara: Hi.

Jenny: Hey!

Lara: Is there a problem?

Bodo: I have to tell you something, because something happened - something really crazy. I mean, I couldn't believe it myself, at first... but you'll have to come with me.

Lara: You know, I really don't have time right now.

Bodo: Oh...

Lara: I'm in a conversation right now.

Bodo: I didn't mean to bother you.

And he slinks away to the vending machine.

Lara: Man, I don't know what he wants from me all the time.

Jenny: I think he's just looking for a little distraction. The accident is still getting to him, too.

Lara: Maybe but... just look at him. That guy is totally strange. Everyone I know says that.

Jenny: So what? What do you care about what others think? Why don't you just go over to him and ask him what it is he wants.

Lara: We'll see. But now I've got to go. The girls are planning to go shopping.

Jenny: Ah...okay. Alright.

Lara hurries off and leaves her bag behind. Jenny notices, grabs it and walks over to Bodo.

Jenny: Hey. Lara, unfortunately, had to go, but I think you should keep at it.

Bodo: And go after her? I don't think she's into that.

Jenny: Well, if you do it subtly, maybe she will be.

And she pushes Lara's sports bag into his arms before walking away.

[Hospital, Michael's room]

Bea comes in.

Michael: Hey.

Bea: I brought you some clean clothes. I hope they're the right ones.

Michael: Probably... (kiss) but there's probably too many. The doctor said I could leave the day after tomorrow.

Bea: The day after tomorrow already? Why so sudden?

Michael: I told him that I would like to go to the memorial service.

Bea: I'd really like it if we attended together.

Michael: I'm so glad that nothing happened to you.

Bea: I had to think about this the whole time ... you were in surgery, and the worst thing was the waiting. And then I wasn't even allowed in to see you.

Michael: Yes, I cleared this up with Helena. There seems to have been a misunderstanding.

Bea: A misunderstanding? If she says so...

Michael: Did something happen between you two? (Like hot sweaty monkey sex, maybe?)

Bea: We just had a little discussion. It was about the AG. She decided something over my head.

Michael: And I know you don't like that.

Bea: But you don't have to worry about that. You just concentrate on getting well, alright?

[Beschenko home]

Karin and a man are in the apartment when Luzi and Ben come in.

Luzi: (to Ben) Momsen road... which tram is going that way?

Karin: Hello you two. We've been waiting for you. Herr...

Detective Büttner: Büttner. Detective Büttner.

Karin: Herr Büttner has a few more questions regarding the accident.

Luzi: Er... but I already told the police officers at the accident site everything.

Detective Büttner: I know. I'm conducting the investigation and I would like to hear the information first hand. It would be very helpful if you could describe once more exactly how the accident happened.

Luzi: Okay.

Detective Büttner: Would you mind if I recorded our talk?

Karin: No.

Detective Büttner: Alright then, just tell me everything you remember.

Luzi: Well, we were driving down B506. And then two cars were coming towards us.

Detective Büttner: Side by side?

Luzi: Yes, one car in each lane. And then they came closer, really fast, and Herr Heisig jerked the wheel around... and slammed on the brakes. And then I thought, now we'll collide or we'll topple over or... but we only spun around... and came to a standstill in the middle of the road.

Detective Büttner: And you're sure that there were two cars?

Luzi: Very sure. They didn't even stop.

Ben: Excuse me?  I better wait in the next room.

Karin: Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't introduce you. That's Ben Bergmann, a friend of Luzi's and our guest.

Detective Büttner: Bergmann? You weren't there during the accident, were you?

Ben: No. I have nothing to do with it.

[Vogel home]

Piet opens the door for Bodo.

Bodo: Hello. Is Lara home?

Piet: Who exactly wants to know?

Bodo: Sorry. I'm Bodo, Bodo Wilhelmsen. Hello.

Piet: Bodo. You drove her home after the accident, didn't you?

Bodo: That's right. That was me.

Piet: Well, I'm sorry but she's out with a friend. Should I give her a message?

Bodo: No, not really. Lara forgot this at school.

Piet: Okay, um, looks like she hooked herself a real knight, hm?

Bodo: What?

Piet: Well, first you save her, now you're bringing over her bag.

Bodo: Anyone would have done that. Good bye.

Piet: Hey. You're welcome to wait for her here. I'm sure she'll be back soon.

Bodo: I don't know.

Piet: Now, come on. This way I can show my gratitude to my daughter's savior.

[Beschenko home, Luzi's room]

Ben is packing his things when Luzi comes in.

Luzi: Typical police... if I remembered the license plate or the model... Uh, what do you think you're doing?

Ben: I'm moving back to my father's.

Luzi: You're joking.

Ben: It's best for everyone.

Luzi: Did I miss something? You were so incredibly angry.

Ben: Luzi, I've taken advantage of your hospitality long enough.

Luzi: That's nonsense, my mother and I like having you here. Hey, what's the real reason? Oh man, I'm so stupid. What was that about things staying the same between us?

Ben: No! I mean... this has nothing to do with the kiss. It's all me.

Luzi: Man, Ben, let's talk about this. Don't just leave like that. Please.

Ben: See you at school.

And he leaves.

[Vogel home]

Bodo and Piet are repairing a table.

Piet: That's it?

They turn the table right side up again.

Piet: Well, perfect. Great. You don't look like a handyman.

Bodo: I was working as a stagehand in Hamburg.

Piet: Of course. Hamburg. Don't tell me you're a fan of St. Pauli (Hamburg football club)?

Bodo: <Hamburg accent> But of course.</Hamburg accent> That's a family tradition with us. And you? FC? (1. FC Köln, Cologne football club)

Piet: <Cologne accent> Sure thing, that.</Cologne accent>

Bodo: Is Lara a football fan too? My sisters never miss a game.

Piet: No, she's more into volleyball. Football, not so much.

Bodo: I understand. But Lara can sing very well. My sisters, on the other hand, only know football chants.

Piet: It's not quite as bad with Lara.

Bodo: Does Lara have a favorite band?

Piet: Yes. Of course. It's... Black Beauty... no. Argh...

Lara comes. in.

Lara: Hello.

Bodo: Hello, Lara. There you are.

Lara: Hi.

Bodo: I mean, I was waiting for you. I... um...

Lara: Uh huh...

Piet: Yes, we've talked a little about football and music and there's one thing I wanted to know... There's this one song by some band you're always listening to while in the bathroom... something with Cruisin'.

Lara: Scars and bruises by The Black Pony?

Bodo: I really like them.

Lara: Really? Then you're probably the only male fan.

Piet: Okay, that's something we can thrash out during dinner, because I'm hungry. (pointing at Bodo) And you're eating with us.

[Music: Hurts - "The Water"]

[Bergmann villa]

Ben comes home.

Ben: Hello?!

[Beschenko home, Luzi's room]

Karin: Are you alright, Luzi? I'm sure it was hard to talk about the accident again.

Luzi: I'll live.

Karin: Where are Ben's things?

Luzi: Gone. And so is he.

[Bergmann villa, Ben's room]

Ben throws himself onto his bed. (The highlight of this scene? Our favorite flowery sheets on the bed!)

[Beschenko home, Luzi's room]

Karin: But I told him that he could stay for as long as he wanted.

Luzi: That's what I told him too, but it seems he really wanted to go back to his father's.

Karin: Then he wants to talk to him.

Luzi: I doubt it.

Karin: Then why is Ben moving back into the villa?

Luzi: Because of me.

[Bergmann villa, Ben's room]

Ben flashes back to Luzi's retelling of the accident and the accident itself.

[Flashback]

Luzi: And then I thought, now we'll collide or we'll topple over or... but we only spun around... and came to a standstill in the middle of the road.

[/Flashback]

[Beschenko home, Luzi's room]

Karin: You kissed?

Luzi: Well, it wasn't a real kiss. It just happened in the heat of the moment, like you kiss when you are completely psyched. Just like that. You know?

Karin: And it didn't mean anything to you? Nothing?

Luzi: Mum, I haven't fallen for him... if that's what you want to know.

Karin: Got it. Maybe it didn't have anything to do with you.

Luzi: What else could it be?

[Bergmann villa, Ben's room]

Ben is still suffering along when he spies two toy cars one black, one white - sitting on a shelf. He takes the white one and balances it on his hand.

[Hospital, Michael's room]

Michael: Well, the car that cut us off was black and the other car was white. They were both sports cars, as far as I can remember.

Detective Büttner: Can you remember any details about the driver?

Bea: The driver was a gigantic asshole!

Wonderful cut to...

[Bergmann villa, Ben's room]

...Ben still holding up the car. Then he lets it drop to the floor.(Drama, baby!)

[Hospital, Michael's room]

Bea: I'm sorry.

Michael: No, you're right. Without those two idiots it would never have happened.

Detective Büttner:Okay. I thank you both. That's it for now. If I have any more questions, I'll let you know.

Michael: Okay. Bye.

He leaves. Helena comes in unnoticed.

Bea: I have to go too.

They move to kiss...

Helena: Hello.

Bea: Helena. I would have laid odds that I would see you here today.

Helena: I hope I'm not interrupting?

Bea: No. On the contrary, it's nice that Michael will have company. I have an appointment, anyway.

Helena: With a problem student?

Bea: If you must know, I'm meeting Frau Krawczyk... to organize the memorial service for Herr Götting and Frau Lohmann.

Bea: I gotta go.

She kisses Michael while Helena looks away (though it looks like a gigantic eye-roll to me). Bea passes near Helena on her way out.

Bea: Helena.

Helena: Bea.

(Meow! But you know they really want to jump each other's bones)

Bea leaves and Helena presents Michael with a bag.

Helena: Et voilá. Beef Stroganoff from Saal 1. I smuggled it past the nurse.

Michael: What is up with you two?

Helena: With me and the nurse?

Michael: With Bea and you. You just had this look on your face again.

Helena: You're imagining things. Bea and I get along well.

[Bergmann villa]

Stefan comes in sorting mail and doesn't notice Ben sitting at the table at first.

Ben: Hi.

Stefan: Ben... I wasn't expecting you at all.

Ben: Didn't you see my car?

Stefan: No. (He notices the bruises Ben is sporting.) What happened to you?

Ben: I fell. No big deal.

Stefan takes a closer look.

Ben: I told you, it's nothing.

Stefan: Alright, fine. So, why are you here this time? For money again? Or were you simply hungry?

Ben: I'm moving back in here.

Stefan: Oh. And why the sudden change of heart?

Ben: I've been bugging the Beschenkos long enough.

Stefan: Well then, enjoy your meal.

Ben picks up his sandwich and then throws it back down again.

[Vogel home]

Bodo: Herr Vogel, your spaghetti is phenomenal.

Piet: Thanks.

Bodo: Yeah, really. It's a miracle that Lara isn't fat as anything. Well, I mean, if I had food this good to eat every day, I would probably be double my current weight.

Lara: Is that why you're eating so slowly? I've been finished for some time.

She makes a move to clear the table.

Piet: I'll do that.

Bodo: Hey, I didn't mean it like that. Truly. You're very pretty. Really, just don't start behaving like my little sister. She's always complaining: Ah, I'm too heavy, I'm too heavy! But she isn't really. My mother always says that too...

Lara: Bodo? It was really nice that you brought me my sports bag, but I really have to do my homework now.

Bodo: Okay. I understand.

He stands up and starts walking to the door.

Bodo: Wait... (He turns and almost bumps into Lara.) Sorry.

Lara: What is it now?

Bodo: The STAG has been invited to Raumzeit Records tomorrow. The boss saw you guys in Hamburg.

Lara: That's nice.

Bodo: Are you coming? I mean, without you there wouldn't have been a performance. If you'd like I could pick you up tomorrow.

Lara: Mm, we'll see.

Bodo: Okay, then let me know, alright?

She nods.

Bodo: Bye.

Lara: Bye.

He walks to the door, hesitates, then turns back around.

Bodo: Good-bye, Herr Vogel, and thanks for dinner.

Bodo leaves.

Lara: Now that was embarrassing.

Piet: Why? I thought you liked him. I thought, he was your hero.

Lara: No way.

Piet: Ah, okay, I get it. You don't want to admit in front of your old man that you... Yeah yeah, right, okay... But you can be assured that I like the guy.

Lara: Really?

Piet: Yes.

[Hospital, Michael's room]

Helena: Eat. Or do you want it to get cold?

Michael: What happened between the two of you?

[Heisig apartment]

Miriam: I'm just surprised that you're able to stay poised with this woman. I would have jumped in her face.

Bea: And what use would that have been? The situation would have just escalated even more.

Miriam: Who cares?! That woman is scum. And Michael knows it or he wouldn't have broken up with her. (Silence) You did tell him what she accused you of, didn't you?

[Hospital, Michael's room]

Michael: Bea told me that you two had an argument about the STAG.

Helena: Oh that, a small disagreement between colleagues. Nothing important.

Michael: Alright, then something else must have happened.

Helena: Not as far as I'm concerned. But maybe Bea is still holding a grudge because of the matter with Ben Bergmann.

Michael: Ben... Bergmann.

[Heisig apartment]

Bea: Now would be the wrong moment to tell him about it. (And anyway, I still have a Get out of telling my partner something difficult free card, what with him not telling me about being married, and me feeling all betrayed.)

Miriam: And provide ammunition to the opposition or something?  What if Helena beats you to it?

Bea: But her allegations are completely unfounded. To claim that Ben and I... that's over.

Miriam looks at her. (Yes, Miriam still remembers that police/prison business from a few weeks before when Bea's "Nothing is going to happen to me because I'm innocent" attitude didn't really help her situation either. Bea really is unable to learn from her mistakes.)

[Bergmann villa]

Stefan: You know, when I initially heard about the bus accident, at first I was afraid that something had happened to you.

Ben: No worries. I'm fine.

Stefan: That's not the impression I get. Do you want to talk? (Ben snorts.) Ben... then just let me tell you one thing... I'm sorry. I know I never should have gotten involved with Caro. You two were together.

Ben: Stop that.

Stefan: And more than that, we shouldn't have lied to you about the pregnancy.

Ben: I don't care about that, okay?!

Stefan: Ben, let's settle this, once and for all.

[Hospital, Michael's room]

Helena: Ben got in trouble with another student and Bea really stuck up for him

Michael: Well... as far as I know she gets on well with Ben. That's all there is to say to that.

Helena: Oh... so it didn't surprise you when Ben took her home from the hospital after the accident.

Michael: Honestly, Helena, I'm... glad that she didn't have to get home by herself.

Helena: That's true trust. It's nice to see that you two are so happy.

[Heisig apartment]

Bea: What's with this look?

Miriam: Nothing.

Bea: Hey, things between Ben and me are really over.

Miriam: Frankly, Bea, when Ben brought you home after the accident... it didn't look like that.

Bea: What?! There was nothing.

Miriam: I believe you. But can you really tell me with a clear conscience that you are completely indifferent to Ben?

Bea: Completely indifferent? No, but I don't have to be. I'm with Michael.

Miriam: Then why can a woman like Helena make you lose your composure like this?

Bea: Because she's playing nasty games.

[Bergmann villa]

Stefan: Ben, listen to me. I know how much I must have hurt you.

Ben: Hurt me...

Stefan: I'm sorry.

Ben: So you slept with my girlfriend. So what?

Stefan: I'm not sure if there's anything worse a father can do to his son.

Ben: I did something worse.

Stefan: What did you do? What are you talking about?

Ben's eyes well up ...

Ben: I killed two people. I'm a murderer.
