Previously on Hand aufs Herz

Sebastian is waiting for Miriam.

Piet surprises Miriam with the finished Bulli.

Piet: We can start driving...to the sea.

Intro

[Vogel home, garage]

Miriam is crying.

Piet: Why are you crying? You're just as happy as I am, aren't you? I am so happy, too; you can’t imagine. I've staying up working these past few nights, and I...the whole time I imagined how you would react to this. And about your work... I've called Saal 1 and you've got the entire weekend off. We can start right now and drive straight to the sea.

Miriam: Piet.

[Outsidethe Chulos]

Sebastian is still waiting.

[Vogel home, garage]

Piet: Miriam. What is it?

[Outsidethe Chulos]

..andwaiting.

[Vogel home, garage]

Miriam: I already knew.

Piet: Lara. And I told her not to say a word to you. Damn.

Miriam: No Piet. I knew from Bea.

Piet: Well great.

Miriam: She let it slip and she's really sorry. But the most important thing is...that we can finally go somewhere together. Finally it's starting.

Piet: Yes, we're finally going to the sea.

(Translating this inane dialogue cost me some brain cells I'm sure. They committed suicide so they didn't have to suffer anymore. Can anyone be more clueless than Piet… Okay, his sister might be able to top this. But not by much.)

[Pestalozzi, couch corner]

Emma, Luzi and Hotte are sitting on the sofa. (And look at our baby butch sitting there with her plaid shirt, jeans, sneakers and one leg across the other…)

Luzi + Emma: Ahhhhhhh.

Luzi: Okay?

Hotte: Sounds good.

Luzi: That's a third shift (Terzverschiebung). That really works with any key, no matter which one. Now you? Nahhhhhhhh...what is iiiiiiit?

Hotte: What?

Luzi: You have to sing the harmony to this.

Hotte: But not here.

Luzi: Why not here? You’ll have to be able to do it during rehearsal later. Naaahhhh...

Hotte: Aahhhhhh

Ben comes up.

Ben: Hotte? Car keys. (to Emma)Great driving.

He leaves.

Emma: Was that a joke just now?

Luzi: What?

Emma: That thing about great driving.

Hotte: Quatsch (nonsense). You really drove very well. Okay, you stalled the car once, but that's completely normal in the beginning. The rest was perfect.

Her phone rings.

Emma: Oh, I have to take this. Maya? (Who the hell is Maya?)Are you finished with your bio homework yet?

She stands up and walks away.

Luzi: Say, are you nuts???

Hotte: Why?

Luzi: Telling Emma that she was good? She drove like a stoned frog! She'll fail the test for sure.

Hotte: Well, what am I supposed to do?

Luzi: Tell her the truth?

[Vogel home, garage]

Miriam and Piet get in the car.

[Outsidethe Chulos]

Sebastian tries to call Miriam. He gets no answer. He lets the rose he’s holding fall to the ground and gets in his car.

[Vogel home, outside]

The car doesn’t startup again and there’s smoke coming from the engine.

Piet: I’ll fix it.

He gets out, opens the hood and burns his fingers.

Piet: Ow!

Miriam: Piet, did you hurt yourself?

Piet: The distributor arm.

Miriam: I was just about to say the same. Geez, that was a joke.

Piet: Damn.

[Outsidethe Chulos]

After some hesitation Sebastian drives off.

[Pestalozzi, at the bulletin board]

Luzi: Hey.

Ben: Hey.

Luzi: Are you thinking about joining up again?

Ben: Whom?

Luzi: STAG?

Ben: No. I’m just looking for free periods.

Luzi: You’re missed.

Ben: Oh? You miss me.

Luzi: On the piano.

Ben: You’re missed too, by the way. When you were living with us.. everything was somehow…funnier. And Karin is missed a little too. Our house looks like a pigsty. My father scares off all the applicants. How is Karin, anyway?

Luzi: Well, money is a little tight since your father fired her.

Ben: I’m sorry. I’ve tried to change his mind a thousand times but…

Luzi: Ben… It’s okay. We aren’t on Hartz IV (welfare) quite yet. Tonight the AG and I are going to Chulos. If you want…

Ben: Sure. Why not.

Luzi: Cool. See you then.

Ben: Bye.

[Pestalozzi, teachers’ lounge]

Michael and Alexandra enter in jogging suits. Michael is sliiiightly winded.

Alexandra: Now don’t tell me that was too taxing for you?

Michael: Quatsch, does it look like that?

Alexandra: Yes.

Michael: I’m just wondering how your girls are able to keep this up. Three times a week.

Alexandra: Four times. If my girls want to play at the very top, they just have to cope.

Michael: Sounds a little like boot camp, if you ask me.

Alexandra: I’m coaching my team the way I think is best, and even though Frau Krawczyk would like to, I won’t let anyone else interfere. Least of all some pencil pusher.

Michael: Oh, Alexandra, please.

Alexandra leaves and Götting appears from behind his newspaper.

Götting: You see, that’s exactly what I’m talking about. It’s teachers like you who, with their anti-authoritarian methods, contribute to the fact that this school will never become what it actually should be: an elite educational establishment. Instead everything frequently drains away into mediocrity.

(And if you look behind Götting in this scene, you’ll see two teachers in the background. At least that’s what it looks like to the uninitiated viewer. But as Jemmalings we know better. And we cheer because Jenny’s arrival can’t be that far off now… For there is Christine Hartmann undercover checking things out at the Pestalozzi before sending her daughter there for the year.)

[Pestalozzi, classroom]

Hotte: Emma? You can’t drive.

Emma chuckles.

Hotte: Well, earlier? During the practice with those cones… You drove over every single one of them.

Emma: That’s Quatsch (nonsense). I might have slightly touched one. But the others were still standing.

Hotte: Yes because I put them up again…before you got out.

Götting: Good morning, everyone. I assume you’re looking forward to today’s lesson as much as I am? For we will deepen our approach…

Emma: What is that supposed to mean?

Götting: Emma? We’re very curious about your thesis on the realignment of the system of states after the end of the Cold War.

Emma: I can’t drive?!

Götting: Emma. Your explanations.

Emma: Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. I’m totally screwed. I’m going to fail tomorrow.

She runs from the room in a panic.

Hotte: Emma?! She probably has to go to the restroom.

[Pestalozzi, school yard]

Timo and Sophie are kissing.

Caro: Great show. Really very romantic.

Sophie: And do you know what the best thing about it is? That it’s real feelings… and not just for show like with you.

They walk off and Ben comes over.

Ben: Hey you. How are you?

Caro: Fine.

She gives him a kiss.

Ben: Wow.

Caro: Do you already have plans tonight?

Ben: Well actually, I wanted to…

She kisses him again.

Caro: My idea is much better anyway. I suggest we indulge in a five-course dinner at Costa del Sol for a start…

Ben: Caro, I can’t toni…

Caro: And after that we’ll go to your place…light a few candles…run a hot bath… And then I suggest...

She starts whispering in his ear. (Thank goodness. I didn’t really want to know.)

Ben: That sounds more than tempting, but we’ll have to postpone it. I’m going to Chulos tonight.

Caro: To Chulos? What’s there?!

Ben: Nothing special. I’m meeting the others for a drink.

Caro: What others?

Ben: The people from the STAG. Caro, if you want to come too…

Caro: No, I don’t want to.

Ben: Okay. I won’t stay too long and we’ll just meet at my place later. Nine?

Caro: Okay.

Ben: Great. Then I’ll see you later.

Caro: And where do you think you’re going now?

Ben: I still have to take care of a few things. Washing the car, and stuff. Later.

[Vogel home]

Piet: I’ve checked everything three times. It’s the exhauster or the distributor arm. But I can repair it. And then we’ll go next week. Promise.

Miriam: Okay.

Piet: I’ve really tried everything. I’m sorry.

Lara comes home.

Lara: What are you doing here?

Piet: The bus broke down just as we were about to leave.

Lara: That’s sucks. So now what?

Miriam: Now we won’t go away but stay here. I’ll just make a quick trip to the supermarket.

Piet: Bring me back some beer?

Miriam: Of course.

Miriam checks her phoneand finds three missed calls from Sebastian.

[Pestalozzi, school toilet]

Caro comes in and sees Hotte standing at a closed stall.

Caro: What are you doing here?

Hotte: Emma is in there. She’s not feeling well.

Caro reapplies her lipstick.

Hotte: You look perfect.

Caro: Thanks Hotte. But you know something? I don’t care one bit about how I look like. There are more important things. Love, fidelity, standing together, being there for each other…

Hotte: Wow. And that coming from you…

Caro: Yes, I am always underestimated.

Hotte: But not by me.

Caro: Believe me, by everyone.

Caro leaves again.Hotte looks after her until a sniffle by Emma makes him turn back to the stall.

Hotte: Emma, come out of there! (Yes Emma, come out! Though the way she wedged herself onto the toilet is kind of cute. But a crying Emma always breaks my heart.)

Emma: I can’t do anything.

Hotte: Emma, what I said was nonsense. You can drive. You’re just too nervous. But we can change that.

Emma: Hahaha.

Hotte: I’ve got a list.

Emma: What kind of list?

Hotte: Of possibilities on how to get a handle on your test anxiety by tomorrow. Everything has been therapeutically tested. Should I read them to you?

Emma: Yes.

Hotte: Okay. Ähhh...positive affirmation. That means that you tell yourself that the test...

Emma: Already tried that.

Hotte: Alright. Äh...Hypnosis.

Emma opens the door.

[Pestalozzi, parking lot]

Götting: Did your watchdog already call it a day, or are you simply fed up with Heisig?

Alexandra: He's called it a day and I'm fed up.

Götting: How long is he supposed to do that, anyway? Checking your work?

Alexandra: What do you want? Is it important?

Götting: I just want to tell you that I think your training methods are great. And impressive. I admire your fighting spirit and the consistency with which you coach your girls. And lots of other things about you.

Alexandra: See you tomorrow.

[Chulos]

Karin is cleaning, Miriam comes in.

Miriam: Hello.

Karin: Hello. We aren't open yet.

Miriam: I know. I'm looking for Sebastian.

Karin: Oh. He went away for the weekend. To Austria, as far as I know. He was really looking forward to it. Should I give him a message when he gets back?

Miriam: No. No, thanks.

Miriam takes out her phone.

Sebastian's voicemail: Hi, I can't be reached right now. Messages after the beep.

[Pestalozzi, couch corner]

Emma is lying on her back on the sofa. Hotte is leaning over her swinging a pendulum.Emma’s eyes (oh, those eyes!) are following the pendulum.

Hotte: You are breathing very calmly and evenly. Your eyes are only following the pendulum. You are only listening to my voice now, only to what I am telling you...because what I'm telling you… is true. You are Emma. (It's a wonderful truth indeed. Could be coming from Jenny, really.)And you're a good driver. You're sitting behind the wheel of a really cool ride... Ach Quatsch (nonsense), that doesn't work.

You're sitting in an ugly red driving school car. But you're completely cool... You and your car, you're one entity. As if made for each other. You're on the Autobahn... But your body is calm. Your spirit is calm. Everything is under your control. And now say after me... I've got everything under control. I've got everything under control.

Emma’s eyes stop moving and stare straight up.

Hotte: Emma? Emma?

(And did I already mention those eyes? ;-) And what’s with the grim reaper standing in the background during this scene?)

[Bergmann villa]

Stefan: Caro.

Caro: Is Ben around?

Stefan: I'm sorry, no. But if you would like to wait... you know your way around.

Caro: Yes. And you're still working at this hour?

Stefan: Yes. I'm still looking over a few business reports.

Caro: Sounds boring.

Stefan: You think so?

Caro: You don't?

Stefan: Well, actually I do too. - If you'd like, I still have a good whatchamachallit French wine in the cellar...

Caro: Sounds better than working.

Stefan: Or waiting alone.

They’re playing mini golf. And to show Caro how it’s done, Stefan has to get very close to her indeed (blegh)..

Caro: Like that?

Stefan: Just like that. Now take a deep breath...fixate on the hole... and put.

The ball ends up not in the hole.

Caro: Oh, come on.

Stefan: No big deal. It has a lot to do with self-confidence. You have to visualize the ball in the hole and then...it's in.

Caro: Wow.

Stefan: It's all a matter of wanting.

Caro: So you think if you want something bad enough, you get what you want?

Stefan: Always.

Caro: That hasn’t really worked for me yet, unfortunately.

Stefan: Then maybe you want the wrong thing.

Caro: I want Ben.

Stefan: But you have him.

Caro: But not entirely.

Stefan: Ben is difficult...but he's got potential. Have a little patience. I did too.

Caro: Only patience? There's nothing else one could do?

Stefan: There is. Enjoy life while you’re waiting, and I'm sure that Ben will soon realize what a special woman you are.

Caro: You make it look so easily.

Stefan: Well, I am on the course every weekend.

Caro: Every?

Stefan: Well, almost every. I meet my business partners there. We make deals, plan business...assess risks.

Caro: That sounds exciting.

Stefan: I'll be glad to take you along, if you want...

Ben: But don't expect too much. It's really just a couple of old men walking across a lawn, all the while pretending to be important.

Stefan: Hello Ben.

Ben: So? You're having fun?

Caro: Yes, we're having fun.

[Vogel home, Bea’s room]

Miriam: I know it's really stupid but...maybe I should have gone with Sebastian after all.

Bea: And then what? You would have ended up in bed with each other. Don't kid yourself. And once back, reality would have caught up with you. What would you tell Piet? The truth? Would you really risk your family? You love Piet.

Miriam: He was so cute when he showed me the Bulli.

Bea: He did that for you. (Yes, I’m sure he hates tinkering with cars. It’s probably just one of those hobbies from a few eps ago.)He worked on it like a madman. You've made the right decision.

Miriam: Then why doesn't it feel like it? (Because Bea doesn’t know shit. She who visits her stalkerish two-night stand at home and is surprised when he doesn't want to talk about school stuff. And let’s not talk about all the stupid stuff she’s still going to do. Don’t take Vogel advice!)

[Bergmann villa, Ben’s room]

Caro: Ow.

Ben: Don't you think that's a little silly?

Caro: What exactly?

Ben: The golfing number just now with my old man.

Caro: I...I was bored. You weren't here.

Ben: It’s not even ten.

Caro: We said nine.

Ben: And that's why you wanted to make me jealous?

Caro: No. Your father was just being nice.

Ben: My father is never nice. Not without an ulterior motive.

Caro: Then you don't know your father very well.

Ben: But you know him, do you?

Caro: I didn't say that. But he stopped working for me while you were hanging out at Chulos with the nerdies.

Ben: Now listen carefully to me, Caro. I meet who I want, when I want, and where I want. If you've got a problem with that then...

Caro: Then I'll take your father?!

Ben: Okay. Alright then.

Caro: What's alright?

Ben: Go ahead. Take him.

Caro: You're not serious.

Ben: I am, Caro. Get lost!
