Letterland - Ein besonderes Klassentreffen

Do you know the place where no one cries?

Where the sun shines day and night? Where luck reigns with an easy hand?

Well, that's the suburb Letterland - purely theoretically, because this idyll is deceptive. Very idyllic on the other hand was the revival of the musical of the same name at the Neuköllner Oper in Berlin, and for Lucy Scherer and her colleagues it was also something of a special occasion: class reunion!

(English version see below)

So.

Letterland – a very special class reunion

It's crazy how time flies! In 2005, the graduation class of 2006 of Berliner Universität der Künste (UdK), mojorin in Musical/Show, showed their prowess in "Erwin Kannes - Trost der Frauen". Already back then, the cheeky play, which revolves around frustrated suburban housewives and one rather dubious ladies' man, met with enthusiastic response. Now, about ten years after the last show, a majority of the original cast donned their old roles once more for 5 shows (June 2nd-5th 2016) and breathed new life into the play created by Peter Lund and Thomas Zaufke. The cast of "Letterland" included: Helena Blöcker, Benjamin Eberling, Anne Hoth, Maria Kempken, Jörn Linnenbröker, Martin Schäffner and Lucy Scherer.

But enough with the official preamble. In the end, what you really want to know is the answer to the burning question: How was it?

It was … AWESOME/TITILLATING! Because a lot of stuff in this play centers around one thing: Erotic letters by Erwin Kannes (wonderfully trashy: Benjamin Eberling) cause a stir in the female population of Letterland. Unfulfilled and suppressed desires awaken, for example in Melanie Flut (Lucy Scherer). After the births of two children, her marriage with Thomas (Jörn Linnenbröker) is in rocky waters. Caught in suburban tedium, she's looking in vain for passion with him between baby screams and day to day worries. He feels the same. To make her husband jealous, Mel does meet with titillating suburban casanova Erwin, not suspecting how receptive she'd be to his direct advances and dancing skills. During an intense tango, all middle-class inhibitions evaporate. And soon, more ladies have to admit that their seducer's name does have merit: Erwin ... kann ... es ... (Achtung: German wordplay! Erwin Kannes = Erwin kann es = literally: Erwin can do it = he's got game/he's got what it takes). And he knows what women secretly want.

It was ... HOT! For example, the heated tango dancing sequence which was a great mix of eroticism and comedy. Mel's black negligee surely also falls into the category „hot“, just like the tropical temperatures in the sold out auditorium of the Neuköllner Oper. Some member of the audience pulled out their fans trying to cool down, but really, you needed both hands free for applauding. Because ...

It was … CAPTIVATING! Deeply funny dialogues and whacky situations alternated with strong, partially even very soulful, solo songs, duets and ensemble songs, that just invited you to bounce and jive along. Musically the play offered a wide potpourri – from the sound of the sixties and ABBA-esque melodies to sounds of tango and waltz sections. The audience joined in, clapped and laughed, and even onstage many a laughing fit had to be suppressed – not always successfully.

The strong cast was in high spirits and so there was a great atmosphere at this class reunion that in the cosmos of the UdK resembled more a family reunion. In the audience, family and friends mixed with fans, graduates of other years and current students. With Kiara Brunken and Katharina Beatrice Hierl, there were also two 4th-year-students on the Letterland stage. So, will they one day, ten years after their graduation, come to a similar conclusion as Lucy Scherer?

In the official program her statement is: „I'm very grateful for the kind of diversity that my studying at university to become a singing and dancing actress has made possible, for the opportunity to utilize all my feelings. The constant change, all the new challenges, but especially all the people that I've met along the way, made the ten years go by in a flash, and so I feel blessed to be back on the stage where everything started.“

No doubt: The Letterland revival was a labor of love for all involved, as evidenced by several posts on Facebook

Translation - short film "Letters from Mel"

Mel: Sorry …

Tom: Take your time.

Mel: How was your day?

Tom: Shitty! Jakob is on my case about the deadline. And then he told me that if I don't go to the trade fair next weekend I'll have to look for a new job.

Mel: What did you say?

Tom: Everything's fine … Oh Mel …Can you even remember the last time we slept together? Don’t you desire me anymore? Doesn’t my body turn you on anymore?

Mel: You know, all the other men I know got totally fat after the baby arrived. All of them, except you.

Tom: What other men? You know other men?

Mel: Tom!

Tom: How would I know how many men touch your beautiful body every day, while I'm fighting for the survival of our family?

Mel: The only man who touches my body on a daily basis is nine months old and just happens to be your son.

Tom: Of course, that would explain why you have so little desire to …

Mel: Why do all men just always only want one thing?

Tom: What do you mean – all? Melanie Flut, you're hiding something from me … What? … Are you hiding something from me? Mel …

Mel: So you can’t say I keep secrets from you.

Tom: So what else happened? How did he get your number, anyway? I mean, nobody writes this kind of message without a reason. You must have encouraged him in some way.

Mel: You think I’m flirting with your boss?

Tom: You can encourage a man without directly flirting with him.

Mel: How so?

Tom: Just look at the way you dress.

Mel: Until now, you've really liked the way I dress.

Tom: But there is a huge difference between me liking you and this scum liking you.

Mel: Well fine, maybe I can sew a burqa out of Justus' diapers the next time I have to go shopping.

Tom: Yes, that'd be better. Shut up!

Mel: Thomas Flut, don’t shout at my son. You have a very strange way of handling your wife's needs.

Tom: But my boss has a better way of handling your needs?

Mel: Maybe he'd be willing to fulfill them.
