If there were a “Big Five” of musical classics, CABARET would definitely be in the top league. The original production opened on November 20, 1966 at the Broadhurst Theatre and became one of New York’s biggest Broadway hits with Lotte Lenya in one of the leading roles. The story surrounding nightclub singer Sally Bowles in the bohemian milieu of pre-War Berlin is based on the autobiographical stories in the novel Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood. The music was written by John Kander and the lyrics by Fred Ebb. In 1967 the musical won 8 Tony Awards. Only few theatre pieces have been associated so strongly with a city as CABARET is with Berlin. So, after a triumphal tour of the world CABARET has returned to the city of its origin – in a cabaret theatre.

Berlin cabaret in the 1920s and 1930s paved the way for revealing costumes. The trend for female performers to wear lingerie spread across the continent of Europe, and corsets, garters and stockings became inextricably connected with the genre. Fishnet stockings, high heels, canes and top hats are common accessories. Marlene Dietrich shocked audiences by wearing a tux during the cabaret scene in the 1930 film "Morocco," and since then, the female tux has become commonplace onstage. If you don't have the possibility to create your own outfit or it's to short to order something...the costum rental around the corner will help you out.
