It's OK for you to feel bitchy after seeing the last episode. Probably all of us will feel bitchy after seeing it. I'm pissed that Sat1 couldn't see what a gem they have in Jemma. We all agree it's the most realistic lesbian relationship ever portrayed on TV and that the acting is superb and the writing well done. But Jemma transcends these elements, as the worldwide response has shown, and Sat1 has been too shortsighted to understand the phenomenon. It's heartbreaking.

I like how Emma react each time they kiss... It seems like she is in paradise, like if she's going to faint... or maybe like if she wants more... So cute. I feel the same when I kiss my love.

This all feels like such a waste of a good story and a bunch of wonderfully talented writers and actors that will never work together again on a project like this, a project that has brought us so much joy and entertainment. I don't even feel like watching the remaining episodes, knowing that after every episode the end comes inevitably nearer and nearer. Sat 1, Du Arschloch!

grrrr... couldn't they have given this kiss a few seconds more? just a few 10, 20 secs - it's broken off so cruel, just in the moment when Emma's wandering to a new emotion in this kiss.
Emma is so intense in this scene, it nearly felt like she would start to cry a little bit out of love. Kasia's play is just amazing, also her unsure almost stammering after Jenny rudely said she didn't want a coffee. well and Jennny going from being a wall to opening up and showing some love.... what else to say? you can only love them ;)

@Anns I feel exactly the same... watching these episodes is such a bittersweet thing ... and seeing how rushed everything gets now, because the writers were forced to change their writing so abruptly, that's the most sad and upsetting thing about it - it's so respectless to everyone involved :( I have to admit that I had quite bad fantasies regarding the SAT1 boss, who is responsible for this mess!

@Anns Well said! It is difficult to watch as we get closer to the end. But I want to savor every crumb of of every Jemma scene. It's too bad the bean counters (money people) and not the creative people have the power to continue or end a show. I wonder whether it ever occurred to Sat1 that their time slot, marketing (including not considering the worldwide fans), and failure to give the Jemma storyline more air time were the problem?

    Anns (Montag, 29 August 2011 21:19)

I'm sure that HaHe hasn't been exactly the most inexpensive concept considering all the copyright fees of the performed songs etc. but it does feel a tad short-sighted to not let it try its wings and grow its (German) viewership on a different time slot. If I have understood correctly, the 6 pm. time slot can be considered disastrous for any show. Oh well, I'm not that familiar with the show business. Maybe we should ask the almighty Caro. The thing that mostly pisses me off though is the fact that they were not allowed to finish the last two weeks of filming. So incredibly disrespectful. Rant over, now I shall watch the episode and weep clutching my Toblerone (I couldn't find ChocoFresh from my local store).

    hephylax (Montag, 29 August 2011 21:38)

For anyone who wondered, my editor changed my "Room" location to the gramatically correct "the room" (because that's her job ;-).
But it kinda makes my Emma Donoghue reference obsolete.

@Randy: Thanks. I tried to tone down the bitchiness because I want you guys to be able enjoy the remaining eps as much as possible.

    @All:
Still, I feel like saying "goodbye" and "I'll miss you" to all the characters after each scene I'm translating this week.
And I was in a very strange mood Friday and Saturday. But by Sunday I managed to get to a point where my gratitude for all that Hand aufs Herz gave us is slowly replacing my disappointment and grief over the loss of my relationship (with Jemma and HaHe in general) of almost half a year.

And I've tried to separate my anger at Sat1 from the HaHe episodes we still get to see.

My advice to you this week would be to not nit-pick at the loose ends or abrupt non-explained changes. A lot had to be cut that would have probably explained stuff. Just use the opportunity to enjoy Jenny and Emma's interaction, Caro's remarks, Frau Jäger's general demeanor, Helena's needling of Bea, yet more Bean flashbacks :-P, etc. one last time.
Don't see this last week as a normal part of the storyline. It can't be because 18(?) episodes are missing and it's really showing and so you're gonna be disappointed. Maybe see it as a way for the characters (and the HaHe crew) to say goodbye to you (and for you to say goodbye to them) in the only way they had left after Sat1 gave them the death blow.
They promised a happy ending. So what if most of it doesn't make sense... We leave them happy and Emma and Jenny are both alive and together and in love.
So let me quote Frank Cooper (who would have thought) of Otalia fame: "But you know what...in the big picture, the whole scheme of things... things aren't...things really aren't so bad."

    Randy (Montag, 29 August 2011 21:47)

@Anns Some of the copyright fees could have been offset by the sale of subtitled DVDs that would have been scooped up by the international fans. But that seems to have been ignored by Sat1. They had a goldmine in the international fans, but they didn't utilize it. And 6 pm isn't a good time slot in any country because people are leaving work or preparing dinner or whatever and aren't available to watch. Canceling a show because of management screw-ups is also disrespectful to the cast, crew, writers, and viewers. While you eat your Toblerone, I'll savor a piece of Lindt chocolate and re-watch (for the umpteenth time) the short Jemma scenes in episode 229.

    hoppetosse (Montag, 29 August 2011 22:22)

well... I'm not sure if giving Jemma more screentime would have been a solution. To be honest, I think we overestimate the importance of Jemma and the international (mostly lesbian) viewership to the success of HaH a bit. The clips of Whisper, which were up to date and with subs had about 20.000-25.000 views, I suppose one eighth of them were from German speaking countries, as this was the percentage jennyandemma had and also MiriBecca (I asked her about statistics). IF Jenny and Emma ever would have gotten so popular as MiriBecca, there would have been about 100.000 views which means about 87-90,000 views from international people and you don't know exactly how many of those would have been double views. MiriBecca were extremely popular despite the fact that this was only a short blow-up, and I think they were this popular because they fit perfectly in the picture of what is seen as beautiful, despite the fact that the actress of Rebecca wasn't a very good actress and the handling of the "shortstory" was poor. I doubt that Jemma would have gotten so many views this easily, because they (or Emma) doesn't fit in this picture of beauty. (Don't get me wrong I LOOOVE Emma and I find her beautiful!!)It's sad, but I think our culture manipulates our way of seeing things, you don't get encouraged to see with your heart....(this is seldom - HaH was in some ways an example for it, although it still had to obey to the rules of soap operas and fix the needs of excitement be showing us a rollercoaster of emotions and happenings)...

Yes, there is a big buzz about Jemma on the web, but I think this reflects more the fact that lesbians dopn't have many great couples to watch and that there is a need for discussion and contact which heterosexuals just might not have, because it's normal for them to see themselves reflected on tv or in films.

Huh! I hope, that no Jemmaholic will now throw old eggs at me or something like that.... I still hope that despite my thoughts above there might be a chance for HaH... maybe we need to ask Hotte for some magical help from Las Vegas, maybe a little spell for our beloved Petra Bodenbach?? ;) Can someone get hold of an adress??

    Randy (Montag, 29 August 2011 22:31)

@hephylax You're right: "Emma and Jenny are both alive and together and in love," and that's a good ending. If, after all the effort you've put into translating the episodes over all these months, you can see past the disappointment, the anger, and the emptiness of having it end, then we should be able to appreciate the once-in-
a-lifetime experience that is Jemma. Thanks for all you've done.

    amidola (Montag, 29 August 2011 23:04)

    @hoppe:
I don't know, I think Jemma had great potential, and I do think, that if they would have had the courage to install the first Lesbian romantic lead couple on a soap, ratings would have soared.
Ratings for 197 were the second highest of all time for the show, and that is measured for Germans, watching it at 18oo hours, no repeated viewings..etc..Underestimated potential. And I have a suspicion, although I don't want to know, about illegal uploads and subbed links.

I just wanted to give big hugs out to all of you guys, take care!
    xoxo

    Metric07 (Montag, 29 August 2011 23:23)

I've always thought that Stefan and Karin would be a awesome couple too! When I first got into the show I thought maybe they were together of they had been in the past. Plus that would free up Helena for Bea for Helena/Bea shippers haha

And so begins the last week :(

  • #16

    AmyLnnLee (Montag, 29 August 2011 23:37)

Well,Im just sad..I cant help it! In my opinion they are the most realistic couple that I have ever seen..I got used to watching Jemma..LOVE them so much..especially Emma..And if she isnt beautiful to someone I guess they are just blind!Thats the only explanation. Oh why do all good things come to the end? : (

  • #17

    hoppe (Dienstag, 30 August 2011 00:11)

amidola - wow! that's great! (ratings for 197) - I'm lucky if I'm wrong :) and I'm the last who would say they are not the greatest couple ever! I just love them and the show with it's honesty tooo much! And I love the community around them because they have attracted such a loving bunch of people/women. I'm still a bit in denial... haven't seen any clips of the last 5 episodes till now ;) oooh what will we do??? :(

  • #18

    Andi (Dienstag, 30 August 2011 00:31)

@Randy: You are right, but It's so hard to let them go, while you know that there is still so much potential in this couple, and there are so many exploitable things in their relationship...

@hoppe, &amidola: hoppe didnt say Jemma doesnt have potential, she just emphasizes the fact that many viewers judge a TV show by the first look, and dont really care about character developement or performance etc. which is 100% true. They decide not to follow the show just because some of the characters dont really fit "the ideal woman image". But still I think, Sat1 really should have given this show more time. I mean Buffy's first season had also very low ratings, but they gave it a second chance, and TADA, It was a huge hit. Some things just really need time to develop... but of course, time is money, Sat1 needs money, but doesnt have time... damn you capitalism!

  • #19

    Randy (Dienstag, 30 August 2011 00:57)

@Andl: I don't want to let them go either because of the reasons you stated. Emma and Jenny are the most interesting, most complex, most charismatic characters in HaHe. Their story as a couple has only begun; there's so much more to tell. As amidola said, they have "underestimated potential." A whole show could be written around them, if only Sat1 had the courage to do so. Unfortunately most corporations aren't big risk takers, and they want immediate results. They aren't willing to give shows that are somewhat different more time to acquire a larger audience, despite a couple of successes (e.g., Buffy and Glee).

  • #20

    Marie-Helene (Dienstag, 30 August 2011 02:57)

I believe too that Jemma have a GREAT potential but not in a show written around them as a lesbian couple but in a show build around Kasia and Lucy's talent for singing and dancing. I imagine a kind of German "Fame", in other words. With Hotte and Luzi and new characters as well (musicians, actors, etc) in some Academy of the Arts. Germany has a great tradition of musicals, they should exploit it more. And their great love would be definitely there, maybe challenged by new characters and situations, but strong and resilient.

  • #21

    Randy (Dienstag, 30 August 2011 03:34)

@Marie-Helene: That's a great idea, but to exploit that potential their relationship would have to be the central storyline. People watch shows for the characters and the situations that befall them that tug at our emotions, because we relate to those things. Singing and dancing are supplementary actions.

  • #22

    frananifan (Dienstag, 30 August 2011 04:13)

I love them. In the spirit of Jemma go forth and love. Find love, give love, make love, and demand from others a safe world in which to do so. (just make sure you are wearing decent shoes or people will talk)

  • #23

    Emily (Dienstag, 30 August 2011 04:36)

Oh Poor Emma, she loves Jenny so much and just try her best to help in her way. But Jenny is so complicated and even saying things in harsh way to her. I don't understand she does not how to appreciate such a good friend even though I too pity her tragic loss. This is hard to watch.

  • #24

    Susan (Dienstag, 30 August 2011 05:01)

    @Randy:

It's OK for you to feel bitchy after seeing the last episode. Why is that ending that bad???
Oh, I'm not sure whether I should just stop watching after 229?

  • #25

    Marie-Helene (Dienstag, 30 August 2011 05:14)

Well, I think people can relate to music as well. For me, it's not accessory. It's another way to transport emotions. And it's universal. It transcends sexual orientation, cultural barriers, etc. I think it's exactly why Glee is so popular. And with music, you can be much more daring, more powerful. Imagine Jemma's coming out without music and dancing, it doesn't have the same impact. A successful show revolving around a lesbian couple is not realist, but a show about a talented group of dancers, singers, actors and their dreams, with Kasia and Lucy as lead actresses, with a lesbian storyline, I think it would be a huge success.

    San (Dienstag, 30 August 2011 05:18)

HaH is a great concept and was wonderfully executed by the writers and producers. All the characters are well-rounded and complex. I'm so glad I was introduced to Jenny, Emma, and the beautiful Jemma story. They are 3 separate and equally awesome things.

@Marie-Helene, re-locating the story to an arts school would make for a good change. As a graduate from arts high school, I can say there's enough drama to go around. And I've missed the musical numbers in the past few weeks. I've always been impressed about how HaH has used the music to entertain as well as enhance the complexity of the characters.
Emma singing Sweet Dreams (141) gave us a look into her inner-turmoil.
Emma's Save Me montage showed us Jenny worrying to the point of exhaustion over drugged up Sophie.
STAG performing Celebration (150), Jenny and Emma were having such a great time singing together (for the first time, I think?).

With all the footage left on the cutting room floor, perhaps we do have something to look forward to. DVD Extras, y'all!!! Chin up, and see you at Box Set 8(?) :)

    Libellule (Dienstag, 30 August 2011 06:46)

ARggghh, damn you Sat1, damn you!!! And while cursing, I remember how much I was blessing you a few months ago for showcasing this wonderful tv-serie... What happened? How could you let go of such talents, without even a second thought? And by talents I mean the whole package: acting (AND dancing AND singing), writing and directing.
And sure, Jenny and Emma characters, their love story, their journey, the way they're written and the way they're portrayed by the gifted Lucy Scherer and Kasia Borek, this is the gem of HaH, its main beauty. But still, the whole show is grand. So many great dynamics, so many narrative possibilities, so many things to explore... This show does even transcend the ones it allegedly or openly takes inspiration from! Do you know how rare this is? That's how you create a masterpiece!!!

Let's take Glee as an example, since HaH is/was sometimes compared to it. Glee is nice for the eyes, it's fun, a bit emotional at times (thanks to some amazing acting once in a while, not really to the writing) but it only skims the surface of things. You could still follow it while zoning out, it's relaxing for the brain after an exhausting day of work. I take it for what it is: entertainment.
HaH on the other hand is complex, beautifully human, incredibly moving. And we can feel all this because apart from the extraordinary acting, we're also given some storytelling consistency. Consistency, people!!!

Considering the amount of "substance-less" and crappy shows we're fed with on a daily basis on tv, no wonder we're craving some thoughtful material where we can analyze, exchange, connect to, admire and be really touched.
    And HaH has it all!

Sat1, it was right there, you had this marvel just next to you, open your eyes for Jemma's sake!
It's not too late for cancelling your cancellation, Sat1!

  • #31

  • #38

    Emily (Dienstag, 30 August 2011 11:08)

    @tamu13...
You are right, it seems like an unequal relationship. Even though, Jenny did care very much for Emma in the beginning but how come she did not see her reaction was hurting Emma now.I think Jenny should learn how to appreciate Emma, even though she has gorgeous look but doesn't mean that she has to abuse Emma's patient and caring. Even though she is in mourn, she also needs to care about Emma's feeling if she loves her.
Now, I'm wondering whether this type of relationship can last long. If there is a 2nd season, I think they may break up. In relationship, Emma is so determine and caring but lack of these from Jenny nowadays and she is being rude to Emma sometimes. I mean they are still lover. No matter how sad are you, you should care for your lover's feelings.

  • #39

    Jemmafan (Dienstag, 30 August 2011 11:46)

I read somewhere that the ending is disappointing for Jemma only. The rest are kissing but not Jemma in the finale. That is sad. I haven't watch it yet as I always watch it when it air
at SAT 1. Should I continuing watching it anymore, I'm in doubt now.

  • #40

    Kittykatcop (Dienstag, 30 August 2011 12:50)

For my part, I shall keep watching until the (bitter) end. This show has transcended Jenny and Emma, I owe it to the writers, producers, actors and all others involved in the making of this show to continue to show my appreciation. I know in my heart that Jenny and Emma are together, forever. I don't need to see them kissing again, to know this. Just to have Lucy and Kasia on screen with them acting their parts is enough to show this. Sorry if this was a bit forward, I'm in the middle of writing my response to Rosalie und Co's "A Giant Wave", and I've become a bit carried away with my emotions. (1 500 words carried away) All I know is that I am a glass is half full kinda girl, why abandon Jemma now?

  • #41

    Anns (Dienstag, 30 August 2011 14:08)

I will definitely watch until the bitter end. I just would love to save up some episodes for a later time when the withdrawal symptoms become too much to bear. But as the full episodes will be online only 5 days (?)after friday, I have no other choice than to watch and wait for the DVDs that will be available eventually.

I have no idea what my friends mean, when they say that I should get a life and that my Masters thesis won't write itself...

@Anns, those damn Masters theses! They never seem to understand when you're busy doing more important things :) Good luck!

But, I do wonder how long the site will be up. Do you think they'll just freeze it in time? There's a lot of server eating video on it, so I imagine not.

@San I guess it won't be long until Sat 1. will take down at least the videos. I'm pretty sure they will leave some content though. Here's hoping!

@Libellule Well said! What are the odds for a telenovela to gather all those great elements? Almost zilch but Hand aufs Herz had it all!
