Your trip to the Swabian Philadelphia

Neues Stück, gewohnte Location – was können wir euch also berichten?

New play, familiar location – so what can we tell you? The Emerald City has vanished long ago, Manderley have burnt down and so the Stage Palladium Theater now hosts Philadelphia. You’ll still find the prestigious musical theatre in the SI-Centre.

Welcome @Stuttgart!

Let's put it this way: There are different opinions about the state capital of Baden-Württemberg and sixth-largest German city. The city center is located in a valley and it's quite aggravating most of the time to drive through the inner city. The muggy climate is also not for everyone. A real eye-catcher are the many hills, partially covered by vineyards. Shopping fans also gladly travel to Stuttgart, just like car enthusiasts and lovers of ballet and opera. It gets really busy in August/September with the Volksfest (folk festival) taking place at the Cannstatter Wasen. It's the second-largest Volksfest in the world, after Oktoberfest in Munich.

Hauptbahnhof / Main station

No, it's not the city's landmark, but it is popular. There were protests for a long time against the plan to reconstruct the terminus station into an underground through station (Stuttgart 21). Well. To no avail. Despite the construction work, the station (including the clock tower with the rotating Mercedes star) remains a signpost, vantage point and exhibition venue.

Schlossplatz / Castle square

Probably the most popular meeting place, in the center of Stuttgart. When the weather is good, a lot of people chill out on the lawn. In summer, there are open-air concerts - in winter, there is a skating rink and Christmas market booths. The Stuttgart Christmas Market is one of the biggest and oldest Christmas Markets in Europe. By the way, the Neue Schloss (New Castle) was built by Duke Karl Eugen and emulates the Palace of Versailles.

Markthalle / Market hall

(Dorotheenstr. 4, Haltestelle Schlossplatz)

Just take a look inside - or rather: take a sniff inside. The Jugendstil (art nouveau) market hall, built 1911-1914, is considered one of the most beautiful market sites in the world. More than 40 booths offer a potpourri of regional and exotic delicacies.

Wilhelma – don’t call it Zoo!

For everyone who is exited by Adrian's pet store, the Wilhelma is the place to be. Originally built as a royal palace for Wilhelm I (William I ofWürttemberg), today it is Germany's only combined zoological and botanical garden. It got the name "Alhambra on the Neckar" because of the historical Moorish Revival style buildings. And there's lots of stuff to see apart from turtles because the Wilhelma is one of the most species-rich zoos in Germany.

The Swabian cuisine tends to hearty meals. Instead of beer, Swabians normally prefer wine. The ruby red Trollinger is popular as this grape variety is only cultivated in Württemberg. Here are a few dishes that can be found on the menu.

Geröstete Maultaschen mit Salat
Geröstete Maultaschen mit Salat

Maultaschen

pasta squares filled with onions, sausage meat, minced meat and eggs. According to legend, this dish was invented during Lent. Meat was taboo, so the Swabians secretly smuggled it into their meals. That's why they are also known as [literal translation] "Our Lord's deceivers". There are three classical varieties:

  • "Geschmälzt" (doused in onions that have been sautéed in brown butter)
  • "Geröstet" (cut into stripes and roasted)
  • as a soup addition in a broth

"Swabian spaghetti". They are the real traditional thing when the soft egg noodles have been scraped by hand.

Kässpätzle (cheese spaetzle)

Teignudeln mit geschmolzenem Käse. Ein Klassiker!

egg noodles with melted cheese. A classic!

Linsen und Spätzle (lentils and spaetzle)

the Swabian national dish of sorts, served with 'Saiten' (sausages)

Schupfnudeln

zerstampfte Kartoffeln in Nudelform, serviert mit Kraut

a type of thick noodles made of potatoes, flour and eggs, served with cabbage

Gaisburger Marsch ("march of Gaisburg")

deftiger Eintopf mit Kartoffelstücken, Rindfleisch, Gemüse, Fleischbrühe und gerösteten Zwiebeln. Ganz ehrlich? Ziemlich speziell und nicht jedermanns Geschmack.

a hearty stew with pieces of potato, beef, vegetables, broth and roasted onions. Honestly? An acquired taste and not for everyone.

And last but not least, a warning: Swabians tend to pour gravy over everything. So if you don't want to get sodden fries, you really should order your dish with gravy on the side (Soße extra).
