Previously on Hand aufs Herz

Bea: Such a breach of trust can destroy a whole lot.

Michael: Yeah, but there’s a difference between keeping something to oneself and consciously lying. There are things you just can’t talk about. Surely you should understand that.

Bea: Yes. But you were the one who convinced me that honesty is essential.

Miriam: That’s exactly what Piet said to me when he proposed.

Bea: You mean…Michael wants to…No.

Sebastian: Well, why haven’t you already told her?

Michael: Because…because I’m scared of losing her.

Bea: That’s…

Miriam: Well, look at that…

Bea: Michael wants to marry me

Intro

[Heisig apartment]

Miriam: I don't believe it. Oh my god. She jumps up and hugs Bea. That’s great!! Or not?

Bea: Maybe the ring means something completely different.

Miriam: Ähm, like what?

Bea: No idea. Maybe…he likes gold jewelry?

Miriam: Yes. Right? Mhm. He wants to ask you, of course. That’s definitely a wedding band. Look, even with engraving. That’s rather obvious, isn’t it?

Bea: Marry... Wow. I love Michael but… Let me see.

She takes back the ring and reads the inscription.

Bea: Forever, M. Forever…that’s a really long time. You don't say. Don’t get me wrong, I…I want to be with him but…

Miriam: This is all going too fast for you.

[Pestalozzi, at the lockers]

Jenny is putting stuff in her locker when Caro walks up to her.

Caro: Well?

Jenny: Do you want something, or are you just wasting my oxygen for no reason?

Caro: No. I just thought... now that the two of us have something in common…

Jenny: I wouldn’t know what that might be.

Caro: We both slept with Ben.

Jenny: Where did…

Caro: Well, I just know.

Jenny: No matter. It isn’t any of your business.

Caro: Why the hostility? I just want to give you some good advice.

Jenny: You, me?

Caro: Yes. I wouldn’t get my hopes up too high if I were you.

Jenny: Hopes for what?

Caro: For you and Ben becoming an item. That he’s serious. Ben just uses women... when it suits him.

Jenny: I see. You mean, because he left you after you totally screwed him over?

Caro: He is going to dump you too. I’m sure of that.

Jenny: Caro, you shouldn’t assume that others tick the same way you do. I’m really not interested in starting anything with Ben. I just wanted good sex, and I got it. That’s all. She starts to walk off, but suddenly stops and turns back. I hope, I was able to satisfy you, too… your curiosity, I mean, of course. Bye.

Caro is furious that she was unable to get under Jenny’s skin.

[Pestalozzi, hallway]

Emma: The things Timo said in the auditorium…that was incredibly romantic.

Luzi: Uhuh. Subject change.

Emma: “This thing between the two of us. That is more, that is love…” Wow!

Luzi: And you’re training to become a parrot or something?

Emma: Hey, that was really huge! Some people wait their whole lives for someone to say something like that to them.

Luzi: Well, not me.

Emma: You won’t give him a second chance?

Luzi: Would it be any use?! The trust is already broken.

Emma: Don’t you think that one can regain trust? So…if you gave Timo a second chance, he may be able to prove to you that he’s serious. God, Luzi, he’s the love of your life.

Luzi: Stop it, okay?

Emma: But…

Luzi: Do you really think I made this decision lightly? I didn’t. I've let myself get involved with Timo so many times, and I have regretted it time and time again. Emma, I can’t do it anymore, alright?

[Vogel home]

Piet enters and dances across the room. A few seconds later Lara comes in.

Piet: Liberian girl…

Lara: Let me take a guess. Your rumba at noon was a complete catastrophe because you smashed a woman against the radiator during a pirouette.

Piet: As if.

Lara: So, it wasn’t as bad as you feared, after all.

Piet: I was I little rusty in the beginning, I have to admit. But I have to say, it’s like

riding a bike. Once you know how, you’ll never forget.

Lara: So, you rocked the Saal 1 and conquered the women’s hearts left and right.

Piet: Nonsense. But it’s cooler than going for a run.

Lara: So, you’ll continue to go there?

Piet: We’ll see.

Lara: But why not? I mean, it would be awesome if you finally had some real fun again. And I knew that you’ve got what it takes. Dancing-wise, I mean.

Piet: Well, I still have to practice a little. Especially since the seven-time pirouette in one place doesn’t come as easily as it did in the past. I have to practice it again.

Lara: Äh, keep me out of it, please. I really had enough with all the singing and dancing in Hamburg, and I didn’t sleep at all last night so…I’m going to get some shut-eye right now.

[Saal 1]

Michael and Bea are sitting at a table getting served their glasses of wine.

Bea: (to the waiter) Thanks.

Bea and Michael at the same time:

Bea: I’m glad that you…

Michael: That was a successful…

Bea: You first.

Michael: It's not that important.

Bea: But you wanted to tell me something.

Michael: Yes. Yes, that’s what I wanted.... he takes her hand.... I-I-I don’t know where to start, to be honest. When we met I never thought that…that we…

Alexandra: to the waiter And you really don’t have another free table?

Alexandra and Götting are being escorted to the next table.

Götting: It’s no problem. There’s nothing like spending a nice evening among dear colleagues.

Awkward smiles all around.

All: Evening.

Michael: What I wanted to tell you is…

Götting: What do you think? The mixed appetizer platter for two?

Alexandra: A consommé is enough for me.

Michael: Let’s just drink to the successful trip to Hamburg.

Bea: Äh, yes. Good idea.

[Bergmann villa]

Jenny is sitting on the couch reading a magazine. Stefan comes in.

Stefan: Was Ben here?

Jenny: Why?

Stefan: Because my son forgot his dirty laundry in the bathroom. Or are you now in the habit of wearing his t-shirts? So, was he here while I was on my business trip?

Jenny: No idea. Could be.

Stefan: Would you please tell him that he should make up his mind. If he wants to be independent and not have anything to do with me anymore...then he shouldn't be secretly coming into my home.

Jenny: You know, I'd rather not get involved. If you have something to say to him, why don't you call him?

Stefan: What’s the problem? You see each other every day at school.

Jenny: Yep. Unfortunately.

Stefan: Why unfortunately? Are you fighting?

Jenny: I wouldn’t put it quite like that.

Stefan: Jenny, I don't understand a word your saying.

Jenny: Be glad. And some other things would have been better left undone.

[Saal 1]

Michael: Would you like an espresso or dessert?

Bea: No, the pasta was delicious. Thanks, but I'm full and rather tired.

Michael: Well, it was a long night yesterday. to the waiter We'll be coming to the front to pay.

Bea: Yes. to Götting and Alexandra. Have a nice evening.

Götting: Thank you.

Alexandra: Thanks. Same to you.

Michael: Bye.

Götting: Have a nice evening.

Michael: I'm sorry. This just wasn't the right setting with Götting and…

Bea: … Alexandra, they don't have to witness how you… me... well, how you tell me something important.

Michael: Yes. Would you maybe like to come back to my place?

Bea: No! Through a miracle I managed to escape your proposal. I mean... to the waiter…. thanks…..back to Michael…. Äh, I'm rather tired. Plus, I still have to grade a few tests for my 8B class.

Michael: Well, that takes priority of course.

But only because I don't want to have to tell you anyway, because otherwise I would be pouting up a storm!

Bea: Are you mad at me?

Michael: Not at all. We can talk later. A day or so really won’t make a difference. I'll pay the bill.

[Heisig apartment]

Sebastian: So, how did it go?

Michael: What exactly?

Sebastian: What do you think I'm talking about? Your talk with Bea. How did she react?

Michael: She didn't.

Sebastian: You're joking. You chickened out again?

Michael: It wasn't exactly chickening out.

[Vogel home, Bea's room]

[Flashback]

Bea: Michael wants to marry me.

[/Flashback]

[Heisig apartment]

Michael: Good god, Lohmann and Götting were sitting right at the next table! It wasn't exactly the intimate climate I was hoping for.

Sebastian: But still, Bea, once and for all, needs to know what’s going on. It's only fair.

Michael: Of course it's only fair, and I will tell her soon. When the time is right.

Sebastian walks over to him and hands him a phone.

Sebastian: You won't be able to get out of it anyway. So don't make a big deal out of it and just tell her.

Michael: You are, of course, as always, right.

And he makes the call.

Bea: Hello?

Michael: Hi Bea. This is Michael.

Bea: Hello Michael. Good morning. I was just thinking about you.

Michael: And I you. Ähm, I wanted...wanted to ask you if you...have already finished grading the tests.

Bea: Äh, no, I was too tired, after all.

Michael: Does that mean you will have to work on that today? Because otherwise I was going to suggest that we have our dinner tonight - somewhere that we would remain undisturbed.

Bea: No! I mean, I...I don't have to work. I have a free period later where I could grade the rest of the tests. So I will have time.

Michael: Okay. Very good. Then we'll see each other at school soon, right?

Bea: Yes. Yes, see you soon. I'm looking forward to it.

Michael: Okay, see you then. Me too. Bye. - What? Was I supposed to tell her over the phone or something?

Sebastian: I didn't say anything.

[Vogel home]

Lara and Piet are having breakfast.

Lara: Wow. Is all of that for us?

Piet: Sure. Scrambled eggs?

Lara: I'd love some.

Piet: There you go.

Lara: Say, scrambled eggs, chocolate spread, full-fat yoghurt...is it possible that your diet has ended?

Piet: Life is too short for a diet. You have to enjoy it. Got it?

The phone rings.

Lara: I'll get it. Vogel. Papa, it's for you. A Frau Teufel (Ms. Devil).

Piet: Hello? Hey Sonja, how are you? Yes. I hope you too. That was my daughter. Yes, why not. Well, then...okay. Cool. See you then. Bye.

Lara: Well?

Piet: That was someone from my dancing class. Doesn't mean anything.

Lara: Sure. Of course. And that's why you made a date.

Piet: To dance. Training. Athletic.

Lara: Purely athletic. And it's not possible that you have developed a little crush on this Sonja?

Piet: I don't have a crush, no. What makes you say that?

Lara: Because your ears are very red. And second, because these scrambled eggs have too much salt in them.

[Saal 1]

Miriam: I heard Sebastian and Michael talking about you in the kitchen this morning.

Bea: And? What did Michael say?

Miriam: I wasn't able to hear it all that well. I was in the bedroom and ... But after you didn't spend the night together... I assume that you turned him down. Bea shakes her head. What? You accepted his proposal... and each of you went to your own home?

Bea: He didn't ask me in the first place.

Miriam: But...the ring. I was so sure. Oh god, sorry sweetie! I gave you the idea, made you crazy...

Bea: No, you were right. He was about to ask me...but then Alexandra and Julian Götting showed up at the next table.

Miriam: That's so typical. Those two have a real knack for knowing exactly when and where to interrupt.

Bea: You can say that again. Michael has already called this morning, and he made a date with me...for tonight. He was so sweet. I'll bet he didn't get any sleep last night.

Miriam: Hm, so what exactly does that mean?

Bea: Ähm,… I made a decision. When he asks me today, I'll say yes.

Miriam: Really?

Bea: It would be crazy not to marry a guy like Michael. I love him. And very much at that.

[Bergmann villa]

Jenny is sitting at the table while the radio is playing.

Radio host: And now, on this beautiful spring morning, a song for all you people in love, and for all who would like to fall in love, and for all those who believe they have already fallen in love...

That's enough of that for Jenny. She stalks over to the radio and violently pushes the off button.

Jenny: Shut up!

And that’s when Stefan comes in.

Stefan: Excuse me?

Jenny: Oh...I didn't mean you.

Stefan: I'd hope so.

Stefan is going through the newly arrived mail.

Stefan: Here, this is for you.

And he hands her a letter.

Jenny: Who still writes letters in the 21st century?

But Jenny's cool disappears when she sees the sender's name: Emma Müller. Jenny rips the envelope open and pulls out two cards which she immediately starts reading.

[Pestalozzi, couch corner]

Emma is slouching on one sofa reading a magazine while Caro's clique is gossiping on the other.

Girl 1: That was completely unbelievable, wasn't it?

Girl 2: But sweet.

Girl 3: Nonsense. As if she would give that guy a chance.

Girl 1: Well, he wasn't really hot, was he?

Caro: Hey.

Girl 1-3: Hey, Caro. Hi.

Caro: Have you already heard the latest about Ben?

Girl 1-3: No. Tell us.

Caro: He’s all broken up over me, my ass! He’s already been comforting himself.

Girl: With who?

Caro: With Jenny.

Suddenly Emma is paying attention.

Girl: No way. With Jenny!?!

Caro: Abnormal, isn't it?

[Bergmann villa]

Jenny is reading Emma's letter.

Emma's letter:

Dear Jenny,

I don't really know where to start, and I don't know if you can even forgive me. I'm sitting here in Hamburg and I can't think of anything but you. I've never felt as much for anyone as I do for you. The kiss with you was the most wonderful thing that has ever happened to me, but then I managed to hurt you nevertheless, because I was too much of a coward to be true to my feelings in front of Timo. I feel ashamed because of that, and yet I still don't know if I’ll have the courage to do it next time. I wish that you could help me to become a little braver.

Your Emma

[Pestalozzi, couch corner]

Caro: I must not have been that important to him.

Emma: What kind of bullshit are you talking about!? Take it back.

Caro: Why should I? I'm completely sure about it. Ben and Jenny did the deed.

[Bergmann villa]

Jenny starts grinning but then the harsh reality starts to invade her happy Emma haze. Her one-night-stand with Ben was even more stupid than she thought. Stefan notice the look on her face and becomes uncomfortable…..

Stefan: Should I start worrying about something?

Which reminds her that there is something to worry about.

Jenny: Oh shit! Caro...

And Jenny grabs her bag and sprints from the room.

[Pestalozzi, couch corner]

Caro: Well, maybe he turned her down at first. But Jenny is so desperate… she probably threw herself at him until he...

Emma: You're lying. And I won’t let you say such rotten lies about Jenny, so...shut up or else...

Caro: Or else what? Cool down, will ya?

Emma: First you'll admit that you were spouting bullshit about Ben and Jenny.

Caro: Why are you getting so upset? If you want to do him too all you have to do is just spread your legs. Ben isn't very picky in that area. I mean, otherwise he wouldn't have gone to bed with that slut Jenny.

Emma slaps her in the face.

Emma: You take that back!

Caro: Are you nuts? You're going to regret that!

Chick fight with Caro pushing Emma down on the sofa and throwing herself on top of her. And are we really surprised that Caro is a hair-puller?

Emma: Stop it.

Girl: Oh my god, what's up with them?

Ben: What's going on over there?

Emma: Ey, stop that!

Ben: Isn't that Caro and Emma?

Girl: Yes, and they're fighting because you and Jenny had sex, dude.

Ben: seeing Timo's look. Later!

He rushes over and pulls Caro off Emma. Or he tries.

Ben: Hey,, heyheyhey!! Come on. Now let her go!

Caro: Why should I?! That lunatic just jumped on me!

Timo: Emma, enough!

Emma: No!

She struggles and tries to go after Caro again.

Timo: Enough already!

Emma finally cools down and jerks herself out of Timo’s grasp, while Caro decides to get the last yell in.

Caro: Hargh!

Emma grabs her head, obviously overwhelmed by what’s going on.

[Pestalozzi, parking lot]

Bea and Helena are parking side by side. When Bea tries to juggle several folders, her bag and her coffee, one of her folders ends up on the ground. Helena seizes the opportunity.

Helena: Oh, hold on, I'll take that for you. Here you go.

Bea: Thanks.

Helena: Frau Vogel?

Bea: Ähm, yes? Do we know each other?

Helena: Not yet, but I have already heard a lot about you.

Bea: Okaaay... Maybe I should warn you. That's the vice-principal's parking space.

Helena: Oh. Thank you very much for the information, but I'm afraid he'll have to look for another space. Oh, I'm sorry. I haven't introduced myself…. Helena Schmidt, the new principal of the Pestalozzi School.

[Pestalozzi, foyer]

Jenny comes rushing in and grabs the first student she finds.

Jenny: Hey, have you seen Emma Müller?

Student: No.

Ben comes walking down the stairs.

Jenny: Ben! Have you seen Emma? I have to talk to her before she runs into Caro. It's absolutely life or death.

Ben: I'm afraid you're too late for that.

Jenny: Why?

Ben: Emma and Caro got into a fight!

Jenny: What?!

Ben: Yes, Timo and I almost couldn’t separate them!

Jenny: Was it about us? Does Emma know?

He nods.

Jenny: Fuck.

Ben: Could you please tell me what the problem is? We had sex, so what!? But… why is Emma so upset about it!?!

Jenny: I don't have time for explanations. Where is Emmy?

Ben: In the auditorium, I think, but...

Jenny: Thanks.

And she runs off.

Ben: Häh?!

Ben is totally puzzled, but just as the scene ends it looks as if he catches a clue….

[Pestalozzi, auditorium]

Timo: I know that Caro is a bitch but...but that’s not enough of a reason to physically attack her. You aren’t usually like this.

Emma: I just can’t put up with her anymore. She’s constantly manipulating and…and lying.

Timo: But why do you care?

Emma: I just do.

Luzi: But still, Caro isn’t worth getting ones hands dirty.

Jenny comes running in.

Jenny: Emma!

Emma: Jenny. There you are.

Luzi: to Timo. We better go now and leave them alone.

Timo: But…

Luzi: Come on.

And they're off.

Jenny: Emma, I…I got your cards. They completely blew me away.

Emma: Then…then you aren’t mad at me anymore... for reacting so stupidly to the kiss in front of Timo?

Jenny: That doesn’t matter at all. Listen, I have to explain something to you…

Emma: Wait, I…I was so scared that you wouldn’t want to have anything to do with me anymore and then…then Caro said all this nasty stuff…

Jenny: Emma…

Emma: But that’s nonsense, isn’t it? You didn’t sleep with Ben.

Jenny is obviously at war with herself over what to say, but she quickly makes up her mind....deciding that honesty is her best shot....

Jenny: Yes. I did. We had sex.

We see the light fade from Emma’s eyes, as her face goes completely slack….a mixture of such shock and betrayal, that one can almost feel the sudden pain rushing through her….. and then, we fade to black….

Finish.
