Episode 208

English

Previously on Hand aufs Herz

Jenny: Heck, that wanker gets her totally high.

Emma: Yeah, great, that you know better once again!

Jenny: Emma, wait! What is it?

Emma: If you prefer to hang out with Sophie, go ahead!

Jenny: Are you jealous of Sophie now?

Emma: Why is Sophie so important to you all of a sudden?

Bea: Michael, I need to talk to you.

Michael: Bea, I don't have time now.

Bea: Michael, please!

Michael: I don't feel like talking to you!

Bea: It's important!

Michael: It's important? In contrast to what? Our relationship?

Bea: I found something out! It concerns the school. I need your advice as deputy headmaster!

Michael: Yesterday Helena, today you. What's up with you?

Bea: Michael, please!

Michael: Bea, you won't get my help! And you know why? This thing between the both of us is over! Because you wanted it that way!

[Intro]

[Pestalozzi, teachers’ lounge]

Bea: Michael, this is important! It's about the school's future!

Michael: Maybe it is important, but I am not the right contact person for that anymore, because I just resigned from my position as deputy headmaster!

Bea: What? You can't do that!

Michael: Of course I can! I didn't want this job anyway, I want to teach and not choke on administration stuff!

Bea: We need you here! The school, it needs you! Helena and this Bergmann...

Michael: Bea, figure it out with Helena, I'm not part of this show anymore, okay!?

Bea: Would you listen to me?!

Michael: Bea, if you’ve got such a pressing problem... Take care of it yourself!

Gabriele: Good morning!

[Bergmann villa, Stefan’s office]

Helena: Anyway, Michael packed his job.

Stefan: So much for your plan to get him on our side.

Helena: Maybe it's not that bad that Michael's out of the way.

Stefan: But the appointment of a new deputy headmaster bears enormous risks!

Helena: That depends...

Stefan: Helena, our project stands and falls with their approval!

Helena: I know! And that's why I already picked a fitting colleague from the staff.

Stefan: Oh. Do I know him?

Helena: No. He's not of further importance. What is important is that I have him wrapped around my little finger. And he supports the “central school”

Stefan: So you talked to him already?!

Helena: Yes. He's really keen (literally in german: hot) to take on more responsibility

Stefan: You mean he's really hot for you?

Helena: That can't hurt.

Stefan: Possibly not. What are the chances of him getting the position?

Helena: The school administration is interested in a quick solution of the problem and the headmaster's suggestions will be favorably considered of course.

Stefan: Well... Keep at it then.

Helena: Will we see each other today?

Stefan: Yes. I have a meeting at 6, but then...

Helena: Call me.

Stefan: Mhm...

Helena: Mrs: Jäger? Please tell Mr. Stutzke to come and see me after the sixth period. Thank you.

[Bergmann villa, Jenny’s room]

(It does exist, yeah! And with our favorite bed sheets, even!)

Jenny half-drags Sophie in and gets her to sit down on the bed.

Sophie: I love animals. I love animals. I mean, I love animals, I love animals, animals are just the much better humans. Animals are honest. I used to have a guinea pig that answered me.

Jenny: Yeah?

Sophie: Yes!

Jenny: Alright!

Sophie: Seriously, it answered me! [genius+hilarious imitation of guinea pig noises]

Jenny: And what does that mean?

Sophie: You don't have to be sad!

Jenny: You know what, Sophie, I think you should sleep a little now.

Sophie: But I'm not tired at all.

Jenny: Yes, you are. How many pills did you take, by the way?

Sophie: I- I don't know...

Jenny: Do you still have some with you?

Sophie: Do you want one, too?

Jenny: Um... nope... So how about it? Do you still have pills with you?

Sophie: No... They're all gone.

[Pestalozzi, teachers’ lounge]

Gabriele: And for that, all four principal's offices of the four schools concerned need to assent. Principal and vice-principal.

Bea: That's how I understood it. A property in the inner-city of Cologne – in this size! It's all about the money for them, this is about millions.

Gabriele: This happened to a former colleague of mine. Back then it was three schools that were combined...

Bea: And?

Gabriele: That didn't have anything to do with education anymore.

Bea: We need to stop this.

Gabriele: Maybe we should contact the school administration directly.

Bea: I already talked to Dr. Wendtland. He doesn't know anything. Or at least he says so. Well, who can you still trust anyway?!

Gabriele: Yourself... Bea, YOU are going to become deputy headmaster.

Bea: I think Ms. Schmidt-Heisig won't accept that.

Gabriele: If there's anyone who can defy Ms. Schmidt-Heisig, it is you!

Bea: At least I have a lot of experience.

Gabriele: And that's why you're perfect for the job. Without the consent of his deputy headmaster, a principal is nearly incapable of action. I know that all too well from my own experience...

Bea: Mr. Götting

Gabriele: Fight! For our school, for the Pestalozzi! My contact with Dr. Wendtland is still well. I’m going to suggest you for the position. And I am sure he will be interested in my opinion.

[Pestalozzi, hallway]

Emma sees Luzi from afar.

(Audio flashback)

Jenny: It might be true that Timo needs somebodyto help him overcome his singing blockade, but Luzi isn't the right person to do that.

Emma: Luckily you know everything about it.

Jenny: In this case I do.

Emma: Should I ask you about your opinion every time I want to talk to Luzi and Timo?

(end audio flashback)

Emma goes up to Luzi.

Emma: Hi...

Luzi: Hey...

Emma: Have you seen Jenny?

Luzi: Today? Nope... But we should have had English together.

Emma: She didn't show up?

Luzi: Did you try to ring her?

Emma: Yes! Well, she surely overslept or her phone is turned off.

Luzi: You had a fight.

Emma: Yeah, a little one. But nothing too bad.

Luzi: Emma, can I ask you something? You suggested for me to help Timo with his voice, right?!

Emma: Yeah?!

Luzi: Well, um, about Timo and me... Um... his voice... Um... Do you think he would engage in that?

Emma: I'm absolutely sure.

Luzi: Okay, great, thanks. See you later then!

Luzi leaves and Emma tries again to reach Jenny by phone.

[Bergmann Villa, Jenny’s room]

Jenny: You should sleep a little now.

Sophie: No! No. If I close my eyes, you will leave! Don't leave me alone!

Jenny: Yeah, it's okay, I am here. No worries.

Sophie puts her head on Jenny’s lap, Jenny strokes her hair.

Sophie: Just stay here.

Jenny: Yeah.

Sophie: Everyone always leaves.

Jenny: Everything's alright, Sophie.

Sophie: I feel sick.

Sophie gets up.

Jenny: Let it all out.

[Pestalozzi, auditorium]

Timo wheelchair dances to Chasing Cars while Luzi watches him through the transparentwindows.

Luzi:It looked quite cool!

Timo:Um, what I said to you the last time… that you are just using me for your PR…by now I know that it once again was one of Caro’s ideas.

Luzi:I didn’t want to make the donation public since I knew you didn’t want the money and that you would be mad.

Timo:You were right as always.

Luzi:Well, I know you quite well. But still I should have respected your decision instead of doing this behind your back and…uhm, I’m sorry. For all of this.

Timo:Me too.

Luzi:Uhm, yeah, Emma told me that, uhm, you’ve got some difficulties with your voice. I mean, that you don’t hit the notes anymore. I thought that maybe I could help you with that. RaumZeit collaborates with a great vocal coach and I’ve worked with her already.

Timo:Boah, leave it, okay?!

[Bergmann Villa]

Jenny brings Sophie back to bed. Sophie lost some of her clothes while puking, it seems.

Jenny: Ok, now come. Sit down. Ok. – I’ll prepare a hot-water bottle for you, hm?

Sophie:NO! (Sophie keeps Jenny from leaving) Will you hold me in your arms?

Jenny lies down with Sophie

Sophie:I’ve missed you so much…Mum. Don’t leave me alone again.

Jenny:Everything will be all right, Sophie. It will stop, ok? First this stuff has to get out of your system. Now you’ll sleep a little. And then everything will be all right.

Jenny ignores her ringing phone (It's Emma.)

[Pestalozzi, Helena’s office]

Bea:Helena.

Helena:So urgent?

Bea:I’m here for the job as the vice-principal. Michael told me that…

Helena:Before you start clapping your little wings wildly again: The problem has been solved. I’ve found a replacement.

Bea:So fast?

Helena:Quite a few things can be achieved when working efficiently.

Bea:Then surely you also informed the new vice-principal about the “central school”. I’ll jog your memory: Four schools in the inner-city of Cologne are supposed to be closed. And therefore a new complex of buildings will be created at the town’s edge.

Helena:Now I know where my envelope got to.

Bea:I don’t know what you’re talking about.

Helena:You don’t seem to care much about the privacy of letters.

Bea:I won’t let you misuse the Pestalozzi for your personal interests!

Helena:Ms Vogel, all due respect for your eagerness, but have you already thought about the pedagogical sense of this plan?

Bea:Which would be?

Helena:I will gladly explain it to you another time when I’ve got some more time. I think it will take a little longer.

Bea:I can imagine that.

Helena:This entire project is legal, in any case. Was that it?

Bea:For now.

[Pestalozzi, auditorium]

Luzi:Say, is it actually about you not wanting any help in general or just about you not wanting any help from ME?

Timo:Neither. I just don’t want any pity, ok?

Luzi:Oh, gosh! I don’t pity you at all! Ok, maybe a little bit. But isn’t it normal? It’s just totally unfair that it’s YOU who’s bound to the wheelchair. That YOU had to go through all of this. Do you think I don’t care about that? It could have happened just as well to me with that accident. And then? Wouldn’t you have had any pity for me?

Timo:Probably I would have. But I wouldn’t have rubbed your nose in it constantly. I would have just left you alone.

Luzi:Ok, uhm, if that's what you want then I’ll leave you alone now.

Luzi is on her way out when Timo turns his wheelchair around and bangs his knee against the piano.

Timo: Argh.

Luzi: What?

Timo: Nothing.

He touches his knee.

[Pestalozzi, hallway]

Emma:(to two students) You guys just had biology, right? Was Jenny there?

Student:No, sorry.

Ronnie:You’re looking for your sweetie? I know where she is. In my girlfriend.

Emma:Haha.

Ronnie:If you had seen Jenny throwing herself at Sophie last night, you would believe me.

(Flashback)

Jenny: Let’s just stay a little bit longer.

Emma: Why?

Jenny: *sigh* Because … Sophie is a mess.

Emma: Yes, but her boyfriend is with her.

Jenny: Emma, Sophie is completely wasted.

(end flashback)

Emma:Sophie didn’t feel well.

Ronnie:She was high! Then she is the hottest! Trust me! Jenny only had to pick her up.

(Emma rushes off)

Ronnie:The two of us could take revenge on them! What do you think about it? You and me!

Emma:You’re such a sick asshole!

Ronnie:It was a joke, Müller! I wouldn’t even touch you in my dreams!

[Pestalozzi, schoolyard]

Timo: Luzi, hang on. Ey guys, could you (assist me) for a sec?

(two students carry Timo down the steps in front of the school entrance)

Timo: Thanks. Luzi, hang on, I need to …

Luzi: What do you need, Timo? What? Two minutes ago you wanted me to leave, now you want me to stay. What do you want then?

Timo: Gosh, it’s complicated.

Luzi: What is complicated? - You know what your fucking problem is? Your problem is not that you, that you don’t want any compassion or that you don’t want to accept help from anyone else. After all, nobody wants that. Your problem is your fucking pride. And you know what? I liked the old Timo much better. The Timo who could talk about feelings once in a while. Or show weakness.

(Luzi storms away)

Timo: I felt something again. In my leg.

[Pestalozzi, staff room]

Gabriele: Bea, if anyone can do it, it’s you.

Gabriele leaves the staff room, Ben enters

Ben: Hey. A … and? Could you already talk to the vice-principal?

Bea: No. Yes. When I talked to Michael he already wasn’t vice-principal anymore. He stepped down from his position.

Ben: Shit. But who? … You?

Bea: At least I’m going to run for vice-principal.

Ben: Of course, you are.

Bea: I don’t want to watch our school getting sold off just like that.

Ben: That would be out of character for you. Just too bad nothing’s going to change for us because of it. Teacher, vice-principal, it’s forbidden either way.

Bea: Right. Forbidden.

Ben: Okay, then…see you later and good luck.

[Pestalozzi, in front of Helena’s office]

Helena: Isn’t the education authority supposed to be interested in a fast and unbureaucratic solution?

Dr. Wendtland: Well, we’re not putting so much emphasis on speed as on finding the right candidate for the job.

Helena: Mr. Weber is the right candidate.

Dr. Wendtland: Yes, quite possible.

Helena: You’re doubting my judgment?

Dr. Wendtland: No, no, Frau Schmidt-Heisig, we only would like to sustain competition and give various candidates a chance and avert favoritism. Oh, good afternoon.

Bea: Hello.

Dr. Wendtland: I received your application. I’m glad you’re applying for the job.

[Bergmann mansion, dining area]

Emma hesitantly enters.

Stefan: Hello.

Emma: Good afternoon, Mr. Bergmann. Is Jenny here?

Stefan: Yes, she’s in her room, you know the way, don’t you?

Emma goes upstairs.

[Bergmann mansion, Jenny’s room]

Emma knocks and spots someone lying under the duvet.

Emma: Hey Jenny.

Emma sits down on the bed.

Emma: I’m sorry about last night. I was bitchy and jealous.

(Just in case you wondered if you've seen that jeans before.Click to enlargen.)

[Pestalozzi, in front of Helena’s office]

Dr. Wendtland: Well, I will get back to you as soon as the committee has decided.

Helena: We are very eager to know.

Dr. Wendtland: Goodbye.

Bea: Bye.

Helena: Just one moment. You consider yourself to be particularly clever, don’t you? But you’re not. People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. And if you think that I will make it that easy for you, think again.

Bea: And if you think I will be intimidated by your threats, you're mistaken.

Helena: Well, you don’t think I would make your affair with Ben Bergmann public?

Bea: There’s nothing you could make public.

Helena: Oh really?

[Bergmann mansion, dining area]

Jenny comes around the corner, dressed in a short bathrobe and towels. (Pick your jaw up from the floor again.)

Stefan: Err, where did you just come from?

Jenny: Err, out of the shower.

Stefan: But I just heard noises from your room …

Jenny: I’ve got company.

Stefan: Oh.

Jenny: Why oh?

Stefan: Emma just arrived and since I thought you were in your room, I sent her there. … Yes. (And he quickly flees before the lesbian drama that he can see is about to unfold)

A horrified Jenny makes her way upstairs.

[Bergmann mansion, Jenny’s room]

Emma: Jenny? Is everything okay? Hey, what’s the matter?

Emma pulls back the duvet and discovers Sophie
