[Previously on Hand aufs Herz]

[At the Beschenko’s]

Michael and Karin are sitting at the table talking....

Karin:I like you...

Michael: I like you, too.

Karin:… but... you like someone else more. You love Bea Vogel.

[Teacher’s Lounge]

Michael and Bea are now sitting at a table talking...

Michael: Bea, I have to tell you something.

Bea:So do I. That with Ben and me... It's true. We had an affair.

Michael looks shocked....

[Opening theme]

[At school, lockers]

Sophie's coming down the stairs when she spots a letter taped to her locker. She rushes down the stairs, bumping into Frau Lohmann on her way.

Frau Lohmann:Watch where you're going!

Sophie: Sorry, Frau Lohmann.

Frau Lohmann: I still expect a presentation from you.

Sophie: I'll get it to you.

She continues on to her locker, while Frau Lohmann scolds another student, then turns around to watch Sophie. She opens the letter and finds a newspaper article. The headline says “Franziska L. disappeared without a trace”. Sophie reads it silently to herself.

After Franziska L., student of Pestalozzi comprehensive school in Cologne, disappeared without a trace, her schoolmate Bea V. is now under strong suspicion for her murder. Franziska L. Both students were in a relationship with Jens N. who has gone missing, too. Eye witnesses report that Bea V. and Franziska L. had a fierce argument next to the school’s construction pit before the latter's disappearance.”

Sophie looks confused, and then she starts putting some things together....

[In the teacher's lounge]

Bea is looking reaaaaaaallllllly nervous, and is turned away from Michael who is standing by the window now. After a few seconds, Bea can no longer stand it and goes over to plead with him.

Bea: Please say something.

Michael looks at her as if she’s crazy...

Michael: What am I supposed to say to that?! What am I supposed to say to the fact that you had an affair with your student?! What am I supposed to say to the fact that you slept with Ben Bergmann?! Huh?! I'm sorry I didn't expect that from you, from a teacher who I thought took her job seriously!

Bea: At the beginning I didn't know he was my stu -

Michael: You don't need to explain yourself! I need some time to stomach this. (He leaves and Bea's like “Shit!”)

[School Break Area]

Hotte:Look at these pictures!

Emma: (unimpressed) Nice.

Hotte:Nice?! This woman is the bomb! Here... Born in Denmark, father is Mexican. She finished her apprenticeship at the Stage School in New York. Wow. I need to find out where she is.

Emma: London, Tokyo, Broadway?!

She rolls her eyes.

Hotte: No. She's somewhere close by, I can feel it. (Emma looks at him incredulously) What? My intuition has already brought me to this poster! To her!

Emma:Sure, Hotte, the force is with you...

Hotte:Yes, exactly! At least I know her name now. Shiney!

Emma:Great! You found that out, so now we can go back to concentrating on what's really important! The preliminaries! We need to go through the duet at least once before dress rehearsal!

Hotte: Yeah, we'll find time for that, definitely.

Emma closes his laptop.

[At the Klein's House]

Sophie is going through some folders. She finds the plans for the new volleyball field and happily puts them aside, only to reveal the same article she found at her locker. She is now REALLY confused....

[Back at the School Break Area]

Hotte: If you're jealous, I can understand that, but you won't keep me from finding Shiney.

Emma:As far as I'm concerned, you can marry her and have 50 kids together – AFTER the preliminaries! (Luzi is sitting beside them, smirking like “WTF?!”) Hotte found the woman of his dreams...

Hotte: Shiney!

Luzi: The woman from New Year's Eve?

Hotte: The woman who kissed me!

Timo: (suddenly rounding the corner) Who kissed you?

Hotte:Shiney!

Emma:What a stupid name!

Hotte: At least not an everyday-name like Emma Müller!

Luzi:Uh, I still have to go to Biology... See you at rehearsal!

Emma: Can we now go through the duet once more please?

Hotte is in his own little world....

Timo: Say, have any of you seen Sophie?

Probably not, she's still going through those folders, this time finding a transfer form.

Sophie:5000 Deutsche Mark? … To Australia? ... Who is James McKenzie?

She starts looking up things on her computer.

[At Saal Eins]

Miriam is at the bar eating when Bea walks in and sits down next to her.

Bea: Hey! You're on a break! How are you?

Miriam looks scared... she’s obviously unsure if Bea already knows what’s going on and totally ignores her question.

Miriam:And you?

Bea:I told Michael the truth... about Ben...

Miriam looks at her as if she wants to say “ARE YOU CRAZY!?!?!” but instead we get:

Miriam: What? Why?

Bea: He was honest with me... So I was, too.

Miriam: And? How did he react?

Bea just looks scared....

[Chulos]

Michael comes in and heads right to the bar.

Michael:Would you get me a coke?

Sebastian:Sure.

Michael:With rum.

Sebastian turns around a little shocked...

Sebastian: Everything alright? (Michael shakes his head)Do you want to talk about it?

Michael:I've had enough talking for now.

Michael just looks at his brother and shakes his head...

[Saal Eins]

Bea: Michael is a teacher himself. An affair with a student, that... That's taboo! There's nothing worse!

Miriam:Piet moved to the garage.

Bea: Lara said that. What happened?

Miriam: I slept with Sebastian..(Bea stares in shock)....and I told Piet about it.

Bea: You - ?! Still in shock...

Miriam (panicked):I didn't want to do that! It just happened! I -

Bea: And now?

[Garage]

Piet is drinking a beer, then throws it at the wall and bangs his head on the window

[Saal Eins]

Bea: What did Piet say?

Miriam: Nothing. Not one word. Packed his stuff and moved into the bus.

Bea: And you haven't talked since then?

Miriam: What am I supposed to do?

Bea:And Sebastian? What about him?

Miriam: Nothing! I told him that things between the two of us... that it's over.

Bea: And he accepts that?

Miriam: He has to! I know you're mad at me... and rightly so.

Bea:I am the last to judge you. How could I?

Miriam (at first Miriam seems relieved, but then looks even sadder):I am just so sorry!

Bea:Tell Piet that!

Piet is sweeping up the pieces of his bottle. He finally just gives up and leans against the wall – looking so...broken.

[The Klein's place]

Frau Klein comes in, seeing Sophie going through the folders

Frau Klein: Sophie, what are you doing?

Sophie: Why did Dad transfer 5000 € to Australia every month?

Frau Klein:You can't just go through your father's stuff!

Sophie: And what does Bea Vogel have to do with this? What does all this mean?

Frau Klein:I don't know!

Sophie: I don't believe you. I mean, lately you've been acting really weird every time Frau Vogel comes up.

Frau Klein: Come on, bollocks!

Sophie: Why don't you just tell me the truth? What do you know about the disappearance of Frau Lohmann's sister?

Frau Klein:Just what the newspapers wrote.

Sophie: And why did Dad keep this article?

Frau Klein:That’s more than 10 years ago, Sophie, I don't know anymore! So, your father was in charge of the reconstruction of the Pestalozzi school back at the same time the twin sister of this Lohmann disappeared. Of course the press picked that up, and your father kept that article because he worked at the school at the same time. Pure coincidence.

Sophie: Yeah. And what's with these transactions?

Frau Klein: God, Sophie, I don't know, I never meddled in your father's financial business. (She begins putting the stuff away) And you shouldn't worry about that stuff too much. Don't you have your dress rehearsal later? Why don't you just rest a bit before, hmm?!

Sophie: No, I won't do that! She stands up while her mother looks shocked that she won’t just let it go. Who is James McKenzie, and why did Dad transfer so much money to him? You have to know something about this, and don't tell me any lies again!

Frau Klein: You can't talk to me like that! And why do you think you can just go through your father's stuff?! Your father is dead and I would prefer if you respected that and didn't touch his personal stuff, are we clear?!

Sophie:You can't stop me from asking questions!

Sophie walks off, leaving her mother to freak out a little bit.

[At school]

Timo is sitting on the stairs. Luzi tries to run past him.

Timo: Hey, Luzi, wait! Luzi stops and turns around, but is obviously not happy about it. Hey! Didn't you see me?

Luzi:I did. But I'm in a hurry. Dress rehearsal.

Timo:Then... let's go together, like friends.

Luzi: Friends?! Friends are honest with each other! And friends don't ask for lies!

Timo: Luzi, let's talk about it.

Luzi: About what? About how we kissed on New Years Eve? Or about Sophie, who mustn't know anything about it?

Timo: About us.

Luzi: Us? You can't have everything. Us... I don’t think that exists anymore. (She turns around and leaves, while Timo stares after her with sad puppy dog eyes.)

[Auditorium]

Sophie, Emma and Hotte are gathered around the piano, looking at the newspaper article.

Emma: Frau Lohmann has a twin sister?

Hotte:Had seems to be more appropriate.

Emma: I don't believe all this.

Hotte: What's there not to believe? Suspicion of murder, Bea Vogel!

Emma:But suspicion is not proof! Apparently she didn't do it because she’s still walking around freely!

Hotte:Ever seen RES?

Sophie: And why didn’t she tell us this story then? (Uhh... because you don't just tell your students about that one time when everybody thought you were a murderer and oh – the real murderer was never found, so who didn't do his homework today?)

Luzi finally arrives, Timo and Bea right behind her.

Emma:Luzi! Come here, you have to see this!

Bea:(smiling happily, not knowing what they're so excited about) So, we're complete! Hopefully you're all looking forward to this rehearsal! What's that you have there? Sheet music?

Sophie: (Holding the article up for her to see)No, something else. Maybe you should enlighten us.

Bea = DEER IN HEADLIGHTS.

[At the Vogel house]

Piet's making himself a sandwich when Lara enters the kitchen. She doesn't look too happy, and is doing her best to avoid her father.

Piet: Hey! Just making something to eat, you want some, too?

Lara: No thanks, I already ate with mum.

Piet: Lara. Hey, I'm sorry things aren’t going well at the moment, I um... I don't want you to get dragged into anything that has nothing to do with you.

Lara:I'm alright. If you want to apologize, apologize to mum... If you know how to do that.

Piet:You don't even know what happened!

Lara: Right! I don't! All I know is that mum cried because of you and that you don't give a shit! And then you move into your stupid bus and want nothing to do with us!

Piet: That's not true!

Lara: Then tell me what's true!

Piet:Ask your mother! (He leaves)

Lara: Shit!

She slams her water down and storms out.

[Auditorium]

Sophie is still holding up the article and they are all waiting for an explanation.

Bea: Where did you get that?

Sophie: That doesn't matter now!

Bea: Oh yeah!?!

They both stand there staring at each other when Sophie finally puts the article down and everyone begins moving away since Sophie keeps getting closer and closer to Bea.

Sophie: *sigh*You still haven't answered the question!

Bea: That was years ago! Why is it coming up now?

Sophie:Murder does not have a time limit!

Bea: Come off it, Sophie, I'm not a murderer! End of discussion!

Sophie:And why does this article say something else then?

Bea: Because some boulevard-journalist wanted to make a story about it! About the suspicion! Why is that so important now? Don't we have something better to do?

Sophie: Because you're our teacher, just like Frau Lohmann, and we have a right to know what happened!

Sophie is now in front of Bea, who looks over to the others for help...

Luzi: Well, she just said she didn't have anything to do with it...

Sophie: Then she can just tell us the story. What happened back then? Who is this Jens? Is that the same as the one from the postcard?

Emma: What postcard?

Hotte: Was there some kind of jealousy thing between you and Frau Lohmann’s sister?

Bea: I would really like to rehearse now!

Timo: We don't have to bombard her with questions now!

Emma:Yeah, we could talk about it after rehearsal...

Sophie: Why are you suddenly so up for rehearsing? If there are more than three people in the room, you don't get a sound out anyway! Bea Vogel keeps telling us how important it is that we are honest with each other! That we can only work together properly if we can trust each other! And now we're supposed to stand up on that stage there and act like we're a team?!

Gosh, she’s like a lawyer presenting her case to the jury!

Bea: Sophie!

Sophie:Although we totally know that our teacher doesn't trust us! That she doesn't allow any questions, and that she isn't honest with us! I won't do that. I'm out.

Bea:But that's … absurd! I can't tell you what happened back then! But look at me! Do you really think I could kill someone? They all look as if they don’t know what to say. What happened back then is private, you have to respect that! When we're talking about trust...

Luzi: Well...

Sophie:Fine! (She grabs the article and gets ready to leave) Timo? Are you coming?

Timo:I'm sorry. (They both leave. Emma and Hotte grab their stuff as well)

Bea: Hotte, what the heck?

Hotte: The other's are leaving.

Hotte and Emma turn and leave.

Bea: Guys, you can't – (She turns to Luzi) you can't be serious!

Luzi: Sophie is right, it’d be easy to explain everything, and otherwise it’s unfair.

She leaves a very frustrated Bea behind.

[Vogel Home]

We hear a doorbell ring and see Miriam opening it.

Miriam: Sebastian, are you crazy? (She looks behind her to see if anyone else has come to answer the door) What are you doing here?

Sebastian: I had to see you. (STALKER!!!!!!!!!!)

Miriam:You can't just show up here! What if Piet sees you!

Sebastian: I just want to know how you are.

Miriam:Fine, and as soon as you are gone even better.

Sebastian:Okay, I’ll go, but listen to me for a moment. I know that you broke it off with me, and I also know that our relationship is over, but I have to know...

Miriam: Relationship!?! We never had a relationship. We slept with each other once and that was the biggest mistake that I ever could have made.

Sebastian: Miriam, don't say that.

Miriam:I did something that I never should have done, and now my marriage is being destroyed by it - Piet moved out, he won’t even talk to me anymore.

Sebastian:Did you tell him about us?

Miriam:Yes, I have.... and now I have to see if I can save my marriage.

(Miriam goes to close the door and we see Lara appear in the background, listening in)

Sebastian: Wait! He puts his hand on the door to keep it from closing. Only one more question. Was it a mistake because you cheated on your husband, or was it a mistake because you don't feel anything for me?

Miriam: Sebastian, I want you to leave now.

(She shuts the door, and they both lean their heads against it. Turning around, she comes face to with a VERY angry daughter.)

Miriam: Lara!

[Auditorium]

After the AG rehearsal Bea is walking around... she starts pecking at the piano keys...then sits and starts to play...

Oh, here I was, ready for some Bea-stuff and BAM here she comes: EMMA – If I Were a Boy. Sit down, lean back, close your eyes and just enjoy. Or, no, don't close your eyes, because actually here's the subtext prologue of the upcoming story. We have the song, we have the theme of the dream woman coming up with Hotte again, Emma is sweet as ever, singing her lungs out in front of the Future Coming Out Monument, ready to collide with 'Hot Lips Hartmann', Timo is putting a picture of him and Luzi into his locker and it is magically beamed to the other end of the school where Luzi picks the same picture out of her locker – amazing – she crumples it and then tosses it into the trash on her way out of the school. We also see Sophie sitting down looking angry, and Alexandra watching Bea play... - Don't know what exactly those last things have to do with Jenny, but yeah...I thought I had to mention them anyway, because everything is saying Jenny Hartmann, obviously!!

[Vogel Home]

Miriam walks towards her daughter...

Miriam: Lara, please let me explain!

Lara:What do you want to explain to me? Which position you tried? Damn, how cheap are you? I thought Papa screwed things up! I blamed him for making you cry, and told him to apologize to you!! And the truth is that you went to bed with that guy!

Miriam: It was a slip-up. I made a big mistake. You are my family. Piet is my husband and you are my daughter. I love you.

Miriam takes another step and Lara backs up...

Lara: But you're not my mother anymore.

Miriam shakes her head in disbelief.
